Grace Cantor Obituary

Grace Ann Cantor EWING TOWNSHIP - Grace Ann Cantor, 91, died May 4 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Grace was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Pultusk, Poland, and grew up during the Depression Era in Toronto, Canada. From a young age, she proved herself an exceptional student, always lively and intellectual, and consistently at the top of her class. She graduated from Harbord Collegiate Institute in Toronto before meeting and marrying her husband, Israel Cantor, in 1940, shortly after the outbreak of World War II. They moved to Ottawa, where Mr. Cantor had a war-time assignment from the Canadian Research Council developing tetra-ethyl-leaded fuels for jet aircraft. After the war, Grace and "Izzy" immigrated to the United States and soon became naturalized U.S. citizens, moving to Brooklyn, NY. Grace and Izzy raised a family together, first in Ottawa, then in Brooklyn, NY, later in Roosevelt, NJ, and finally in Ewing Township. Grace had a long career as an executive secretary at American Cyanamid Agricultural Center in Princeton. She also was a real estate salesperson with Mann Realty in Trenton and served as a Democratic committeewoman in Ewing Township for many years. She retired in 1989 and devoted herself to caring for her husband. Throughout her life, Grace and Izzy valued education above all and made it a priority in raising their own children. Izzy died in 2000 a few months before their 60th wedding anniversary. Grace and Izzy supported many Jewish and Zionist causes and were strong supporters of the State of Israel and were long-standing members of Adath Israel Congregation, presently in Lawrenceville, NJ, since 1961. Grace will be remembered for her intelligence, dry wit, and devotion to her family and friends. She will also be remembered for her personal generosity -- her unique way of providing extraordinary help and support to family and friends without taking credit or expecting anything in return. Grace is survived by her children, Daniel and Laurel Masten Cantor of Princeton, NJ; David Cantor of Brussels, Belgium, and Judith Bernstein of Teaneck, NJ, as well as four grandchildren, Jonathan Cantor of Manhattan, Malka Cantor of Brussels, Lea Cantor of Brussels, and Michael Bernstein of Washington Heights, NY. Grace also leaves extended family in Toronto, Los Angeles, England, Israel, and many devoted friends. Contributions may be made in Grace's honor to Adath Israel Congregation of Lawrenceville, the Jewish Federation of Mercer-Bucks, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and/or the charity of your choice. Funeral services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Adath Israel Congregation,1958 Lawrenceville Rd, Lawrenceville. Burial will follow at Fountain Lawn Memorial Park, Ewing. Arrangements by Orland's Ewing Memorial Chapel,1534 Pennington Road,Ewing Township.

I have many childhood memories of Grace and Izzy, as well as Judy, David and Daniel. Childhood friends from Toronto, my mother Priscilla and Grace had a close relationship all of their lives. I was so sorry to hear of Grace's passing, but want you to know that I remember both her and your Dad with great fondness. May their memory be for a blessing

To Danny and all the extended family, my deepest condolences. I will always remember Grace fondly, as well as your dad, Izzy. Grace always had a smile and funny/witty comment for us every time we would meet, and it seemed like your parents both were dear family friends forever (certainly before I was even born). She was always there for us, even when her health was an issue, and was a treasure to our community, both the Jewish and larger one of Ewing. I'm sorry that I will be out of town during the funeral or I would have tried to be there, but please know that my thoughts will be with all of you. May Grace's memory be a great comfort, as she will live on in our memories.

Grace and Izzy were beloved family friends for literally as long as I can remember. I always looked forward to seeing her at high holiday services each year. She was perpetually sharp as a tack, remembered the personal details about people, and took a sincere interest. She was small in stature but with a larger than life personality that was absolutely unforgettable. Our condolances go out to all of you. We hope Grace is at peace at last. Dan and family- I was sorry to read of your mother's death. There is little solice in the fact that we have the good fortune to have our parents with us longer than our parents had theirs. It still hurts when they pass on . Please accep[t my sincere condolences. Howard Rednor
