Nathaniel McKee Obituary
Nate was born in Trenton, N.J., where he spent his early years. Nate graduated from George School in Newtown, in 1979, where he excelled both academically and athletically. At George School, he founded the Black Students Union and served as captain of the varsity basketball, track and football teams. Nate attended Rutgers University, Camden, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1983. At Rutgers, Nate served as a student representative on the Board of Governors, vice president of the Rutgers Student Government and president of the Black Student Union. Nate began a long career helping to change the lives of hundreds of children by working in education beginning at the Trenton Board of Education (1982-5); the Trenton Recreation Department (1984-1989); and Trenton Central High School (1985-6). In 1987, Nate returned to his alma mater, George School, where he spent 23 years. During his tenure, he served as Director of Student Activities, Associate Dean of Students and Dean of Students. In addition, he taught global history and African-American history and coached football, basketball and track. He also served on various committees and as an advisor to scores of students. He led a group of students and teachers on an African Work Camp to Gambia, Zambia and Kenya in 1990. He founded and coordinated the Dr. Martin Luther King Day at George School. He founded the UMOJA Group, and the George School Gospel Choir.
He was also active outside of George School, serving on the board of directors of Say Yes to Health, Inc. and the Bucks County Peace Center; member of the Friends Council on Education Leadership Institute; and supervising the Clean Sweep Inner City Games in Philadelphia. Nate has been recognized as a member of: Who's Who Among America's High School Students (1979); Who's Who Among America's College Students (1983); Who's Who Among America's Teachers (1992). Nate was inducted into the Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in Ewing, N.J. and the Philadelphia 76ers honored him as a Hometown Hero in 2003.
Grandson of the late Elizabeth Bell, Nate is survived by his wife, Renee L. McKee; children, Lauren A., Nathaniel A. and Dariyah I. McKee; mother, Geraldine-Morrison McKee; sisters, Linia "Faye" Hawkins, Sherry (Archie) Jones, Jacqueline (Fred) Eutsey; brothers, La-shuyn, and Terrance McKee; in-laws, Charles and Ruthel Hall; 13 nieces and nephews; 16 great-nieces and great-nephews; godchildren, Shareef and Rasheed Magby.
Funeral service will be at noon on Saturday (March 23) at the Lutheran Church of God's Love, 791 Newtown- Yardley Road, Newtown. Calling hours will be 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. Interment will follow at the Ewing Cemetery in Ewing, N.J. The service will conclude with a fellowship gathering at the Lower Bucks Masonic Hall in Yardley. Arrangements are by the Hughes Funeral Home, Trenton.

I was shocked to discover just today of Nate's passing ten months ago, having read the notice published in the most recent issue of Georgian, our high school alumni magazine. I first met Tony, as we knew him then, in our sophomore year at George School. We enjoyed a lot of basketball together and he was the funniest man on campus. We reconnected at our 20th reunion and it was clear that he came to emanate a spirit that was beyond description. I offer fervent prayers for the progress of his soul.

It was pleasure to have had the chance to meet Tony. He was not only a great classmate and teammate but also a terrific and funny man. I had the pleasure of playing football with Tony and he caught everything I threw his way. He made me look good. On or off the field, Tony was truly a talented man. The room was always some how bigger when he was in it. My thoughts and prays go out to his family. Truly a great loss.

Dear McKee Family:
Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Andrew Kardish and unfortunately I am writing to you today as a result of a dear friend and your husband and father's passing. I knew him as Tony or "Dr. T". I came to know Tony as a Sophomore at The George School in 1976. We were dorm mates both residing on 3rd Floor Orton. We became friends when Tony “schooled me” on how to box and the consequences of when an errant punch inadvertently
went to the “dome”. (Mind you we were at a Quaker school where violence is prohibited so none of this really happened.) We became fast friends, playing football and baseball together for seasons to come. Tony was gregarious, colorful animated and outspoken and his self-proclaimed nickname “Dr.T” came from his likening of himself to Julius Erving aka “Dr. J.” where his basketball
skills stood out. We were also classmates where I can fondly remember feeding Antonio, incorrect answers in Miss Pegita's Spanish Class. But most of all I remember when Tony was there when I really needed him. You see, I was the kid that cut off his fingers in Woodshop. Tony was my classmate, he accompanied and stayed with me at the Hospital, through surgery. Mind you, it was the day of our “Senior Dance”. I don't know if Tony was late or if he missed it altogether, he never brought it up and I was “out of it”. I never thought to ask. This was the Nate “Tony” McKee that we all remember. At 18 years of age, the stock of the man that Tony was, had been formed. He was a kind and compassionate man despite his tough exterior. We re-connected at our 5 year reunion and remained loosely in touch until he left George School.
I am blessed to have known him and call him friend.

To the McKee family: Like others, I was shocked and tremendously saddened to learn of Tony's passing. I was a freshman at GS when Tony was a upperclassman. He looked out for me a bit on the basketball court and made me feel included even when I was not playing at his level. I will always remember that kindness. I will miss Tony and wish you all much comfort.
