Guido Malacarne, 97, of DuBois, PA, passed away May 18, 2022 at Penn Highlands Elk. He was born July 6, 1924 in Ramseytown, PA, to Guido and Luigia Benassutti Malacarne. His parents immigrated from the Trentino area of northern Italy.
He graduated from Brookville schools in 1942. Guido served in the US Navy on the submarine USS Black Fin in the Pacific theater. While attending Clarion University, he lettered for three years in both football and baseball. He was named an All-State tackle and was a member of Clarion's only undefeated baseball team. Upon graduation, he earned a master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1952. He married Margie Harriger in July 1949. After her death, he married Janice Smeal King in July 2006. She survives.
Guido taught history, was a guidance counselor and coached the Reynoldsville High School football team from 1951 through 1958. The team had four consecutive championships. He also worked as a part-time police officer and at a local shoe shop in Reynoldsville.
He joined Riverside Markets in 1958 as a personnel director and market supervisor. In 1964, he became manager of market operations and in 1966 was named assistant general manager. In 1975, he was promoted to general manager and soon after was named president. When Riverside Markets merged with Penn Traffic Company, he was named senior vice president. Guido received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Clarion University in 1980, was selected by the PSAC in 2001 as one of Clarion's top eight success stories during its Golden Anniversary year and was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
After retirement Guido took advantage of one of his passions – hunting. He hunted in Scotland, Argentina, British Columbia and Zimbabwe. His adventures and storytelling captivated friends and family. He was an avid gardener and was known for his green thumb with tomatoes and hot peppers. His children, John, Pat, and Susan fondly remember early years with many English Setters, waterskiing, trips to Ocean City, NJ, and not so fondly – hours of weeding flower beds.
He was a proud and generous grandfather to his six grandchildren: Tim, Jonathan, and Mark Malacarne, Leah Dolby, and Grant and Natalie Dull.
Guido lived his life with goals, determination and energy. He will be remembered with love and respect.
