Irene Smilo

Irene (Hook) Smilo, 89, of Glen Campbell, Pa., died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at Christ The King Manor, DuBois, Pa.
The daughter of Michael and Mary (Betsa) Hook, she was born on March 2, 1927, in Banks Twp., Indiana Co., Pa.
Irene was a lifelong member of the SS Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Urey, where she actively served her church as the church secretary and as a member of the church choir.
She had worked at Punxsy Sportswear.
Irene's life was centered upon her faith and her family.
Her favorite hobby was being the family photographer capturing family gatherings and events in pictures that her family treasures. She was known to be an excellent dancer and greatly enjoyed spending time on the dance floor.
Irene could also be found in contented moments engaged in knitting; crocheting and tending to her potted plants.
Irene married John Smilo on June 15, 1957, and they shared 54 years together.
She is survived by her three sons: Dr. John Smilo and wife Traci of Coshocton, Ohio; Michael Smilo of Punxsutawney, Pa., and Matthew Smilo of DuBois, Pa.; seven grandchildren: Tyler and Bradley Smilo, Joshua Yount and wife Heather, Vanessa Yount and fiancé Greg Strawser, Rachel and Jacob Smilo and Mary Smilo; four great grandchildren: Evan, Eva, Delilah and Elliott; daughter-in-law, Maria Smilo of Natchez, Mississippi; her two sisters, Betty Patton of North Palm Beach, Fla., and Margie Hook of Glen Campbell, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hook of Charleston, S.C. and Sally Hook of Decker's Point, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Smilo on March 6, 2012; daughter, Amanda Irene Smilo on Feb. 5, 2000; son, Ronald Mark Smilo on Jan. 10, 2015; and her three brothers: John, George and Ronald Hook.
Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, Pa. There will be a Panachida service on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at 3 p.m. during the afternoon visitation at the funeral home. A 10 a.m. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the SS Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Urey, Pa., on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, with the V. Rev. Mark Meholick as celebrant. Interment will follow at the SS Peter & Paul Orthodox Church Cemetery, Urey, Pa.
