Mary McAfoose Obituary

Mary Kathryn (née Cowan) McAfoose of Dublin, Ohio, formerly of Jackson Center, Pa., and New Wilmington, Pa., passed away at her home on July 4, 2017, with family at her side. She was 80 years old.
Mary was born in Summerville, Pa., on April 13, 1937, to Edgar Cowan and Josephine (Brosius) Cowan Geist. She married Wesley McAfoose on June 30, 1955, and he died in 2000. Mary was a seamstress for 12 years at Cliff's Cleaners and Wheaton & Sons Cleaners in Mercer, Pa. She later was self-employed as a seamstress working from her home, retiring in 1987.
Mary was a grateful recipient of a liver transplant in 1992. She was active for many years volunteering in her community serving as a Girl Scout leader and helping her husband with his Boy Scout troop; organizing Sunday worship experiences for the residents of Polk State School with the help of many local congregations; volunteering as a seamstress for senior residents of the Shenango Home; was a past Matron of Mercer Eastern Star #180; serving as Jackson Grange Program Chairperson; was a past president of Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care Auxilliary; and Youth Leader and Sunday School teacher at Jackson Center Presbyterian Church. Mary was a current member of Neshannock Presbyterian Church in New Wilmington, Pa., and was previously a long-term member of Jackson Center Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Kathryn (Ron) Kirkpatrick of Columbus, Ohio; one son, Marvin (Karen) McAfoose of Jackson Center, Pa.; four grandchildren: Mitchell (Stacy) McAfoose, Tyler (Nikki) McAfoose, Lindsey (Tim) Belcher, Brady Kirkpatrick; two step-grandchildren, Justin Bence, Christy (Jim) Wygant; six great-grandchildren: Quinn and Cole McAfoose, Wesley McAfoose, Levi and Lydia Gordon; Wesley Belcher; five step great-grandchildren: Blake and Brenna Wygant; Garrett, Parker, and Emma Belcher; two sisters, Bertha Reitz and Joanne Dinger; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Beulah McAfoose, Lillian Dusch, Ray McAfoose, Richard McAfoose, Floyd (Deann) McAfoose, LaRue Pangallo, Harold (Lora) McAfoose, Louise (Clete) Graver; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wesley McAfoose; and one daughter, Shirley McAfoose.
The family will receive friends on July 18, 2017, from 1 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 3 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington, Pa., with the Rev. William Stone, Jr., pastor of Neshannock Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Jackson Center, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Neshannock Presbyterian Church, Lifeline of Ohio, or Ohio Health Hospice.

Mary and I grew to be such friends at Friendship Village of Dublin. We had a PA bond and would talk about past memories and current events in our home towns. We had plenty of laughter and smiles! I will miss my buddy greatly!!
