Sister Ann F. Hanley CSJ

Ann Hanley Obituary

Sister Ann Francis Hanley, CSJ, 90, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, in the 72nd year of her religious life. The daughter of William Francis and Dorothy Nelson Hanley, Sister Ann Francis entered the Congregation from St. Agatha Parish in Bridgeville. With a joyful heart and a grateful spirit, Sister Ann Francis spent 30 years nurturing the hearts and minds of children in the Pittsburgh and Altoona-Johnstown dioceses. She ministered as a teacher at St. Charles in Donora (1957 to 1958) and St. Catherine in Pittsburgh (1958 to 1965) and as both teacher and principal at St. Peter in Somerset (1965 to 1970). She was also principal at Annunciation in Pittsburgh (1970 to 1976) and later served as an education support teacher at St. John of God in McKees Rocks (2007 to 2009). "Look for the good and you will find it," she said, reflecting on meeting "so many wonderful people" through her ministries of education, counseling, and social services. Sister Ann Francis loved people, loved to laugh, and loved participating in the Mass. Known for her thoughtful presence, she served six years in congregational leadership before ministering at the Pittsburgh Mt. Oliver Intermediate Unit for nine years. Her warmth and compassion were a gift to those receiving help through hard times at Pittsburgh's Jubilee Kitchen, where she spent 12 years in adult education and career development. She was also an early member of the Beaver County Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition, joining during its formative years. "It's amazing to me, the beauty of life and what God brings to you," she once said. "One life goes fast, but it is fun." Predeceased by a brother, Bill Hanley; and two sisters, Mary Ann Fiorentini and Sarah Herman. Sister Ann Francis is survived by nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, associates, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. The Sisters are grateful to the Supportive Living staff at the Motherhouse for their care of Sister Ann Francis. Friends will be received from 1 to the close of the Prayer Vigil, which begins at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025, and from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, in Medaille Hall at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
