Dean Caldwell Obituary

Dean Caldwell, 83, of Fairfield Township, died Sunday, July 20, 2025, at IHS Latrobe Hospital. He was born May 20, 1942, in New Florence, a son of the late Homer and Agnes Henderson Caldwell. Dean was known for his gift of storytelling and the ability to make a stranger into a friend within a few minutes. For over 35 years he was the owner of Dean's Drain Service ("Dipper Dean," as he was known throughout the valley) and so proud to pass this down to his grandson and great-grandson. He was a member of Fort Palmer Presbyterian Church and its choir, a proud member of the Fairfield Township VFD for over 65 years, the Ligonier Lodge #331 F&AM for over 50 years, and served in the US Army National Guard guarding the gold at Fort Knox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jacqueline Ann "Jackie" Caldwell, and his sister, Sis Fry. Dean is survived by his children, Beth Caldwell, Ronald "Bud" Caldwell, Bonnie Waltz (Greg), and Kelly Miller (Pat); grandchildren, Tiffany White (Bill), Trisha Caldwell-Cravener (Chris Beddick), Tara Jellison (Shawn), Candace Carbone, Zachary Waltz (Summer), and Ryan Waltz (Amia); great-grandchildren, Killian and MacCauley Cravener, Harlee and Bowen Thompson, Ryver Jellison, Emma Louise White, Caleb Carbone, and Bennett Dean Waltz; brothers, Richard "Dick" Caldwell (Nancy) and Barry Caldwell; in-laws Carol Clawson (Denny), Dick Luther (Sue), and Dave Luther (Lynda); numerous nieces and nephews who he cherished; and good friends Joyce West and Bob Lawson. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in MCCABE FUNERAL HOME, 144 East Main Street, Ligonier. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Fort Palmer Presbyterian Church with his pastor, the Reverend Dr. J. Paul McCracken, officiating. Interment will follow in the West Fairfield Cemetery. Ligonier Lodge #331 F&AM will conduct a service at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, and the Fairfield Township VFD will conduct a service at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. online condolences may be made at www.mccabefuneralhomespa.com.

My wife Karen and I first met Dean and Jackie during the covid pandemic. We had just moved in across the street when I got very sick. It was then that this smiling stranger showed up on our porch to see if we needed anything. For nearly a month Dean helped us any way he could. It wasn't until a year later when we started going to Fort Palmer Church that we learned he was like that with everyone.
Knowing Dean these last five years has been a blessing from God.
