Janet Latimer Obituary

Janet Ann Smith Latimer passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2023, in Hagerstown, Md., after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Aug. 2, 1938, in Latrobe, Janet's journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to her family, a passion for her hobbies and a spirit that uplifted everyone around her. Mom, affectionately known by those close to her as the matriarch of her family, was the beloved wife of James D. Latimer Jr., with whom she shared an enduring love that was the cornerstone of our family. She was a devoted mother to her son, James D. Latimer III and his wife, Ellyn; her daughter, Tracy L. Hoover and her husband, Tim; and was preceded in death by her son, Randy P. Latimer. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and pride to her life. Mom embraced the role of a homemaker with grace and creativity, creating a warm and welcoming home that was the heart of family gatherings. She was a master of the art of baking, her recipes and treats becoming cherished traditions, especially during the Christmas season, which she adored and celebrated with festive enthusiasm. Mom's interests reached beyond the home as well. She was an avid golfer, a testament to her competitive spirit and love for the outdoors. Her presence on the golf course was marked by laughter and camaraderie. In the bowling alley, Mom's spirited energy and friendly competitiveness made her a favorite among her teammates and friends. As we bid farewell to Janet Ann Smith Latimer, we do so with immense gratitude for the time we were privileged to share with her. Her journey may have ended, but the memories she created will continue to light the way for generations to come. Mom's life was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Mom was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Union Cemetery, New Alexandria, surrounded by the love of her family. As the sun sets on a life filled with moments worth cherishing, we take solace in knowing that Mom's spirit will forever dance in the hearts of those she loved.

James,
My deepest sympathies and condolences to you and your family on the loss of your loving spouse. Although I never met your loving spouse, I wanted to reach out to you, since I lost my loving spouse, Cathy of 58 years of marriage. The grieving process takes a long time to permit healing. My heart goes out to you and your family at this most difficult time for you. May God continue to bless you and your family with His Strength and His Light. All the best, John
P.S. I will never forget our golfing together at Ligonier Country Club. After I had a beautiful tee shot into to the fairway with a slight uphill lie, you told me, John, choke up on your club a bit and take a healthy cut. So I did, and completely whiffed the ball. We laughed so hard, I had tears in my eyes, and you damn near swallowed your chew..!! It sounds like your loving spouse loved the game as you did. May She rest In Peace, and May Her Memory be Eternal.

So sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Janet was a good friend to my mom. When she popped in for a visit, my dad would offer her a beer. Her response was always "Sure, Bob, I'll have a beer!" My favorite hobby of hers was her Christmas ribbon candy! I still use her Texas Sheet Cake recipe today. And I can never forget our mutual birthday! Your mom was a bright spirit in this world.
