Joseph Paul was my big brother. Joseph was strong, creative and loving. He had many hobbies but baseball was Joseph's love. My only brother is now in heaven with mom and dad and sister Betty. Gone but never forgotten. Love sister Mackie

"Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability," "There is nothing that God will not forgive," and "Always be true to those who love you." A few words of wisdom from my dad that I'll always remember.
Looking back, I can say that Our childhoods in the Maier house were nothing short of perfect. Our parents devoted their lives to our happiness and well being. From magical Christmases when he would climb up on the roof and stomp around like reindeer and we would be in a panic cause Santa was here, my mom would rush in and say "that sounds like reindeer, Santa Claus isn't coming in if you're awake." Of course, we eventually fell asleep to the ruffle of wrapping paper and whispers from the livingroom. They had as much joy as we did.
Birthdays consisted of my mom making a cake and we put some candles in it and sang happy birthday around the kitchen table after supper, nothing fancy, no guests, just us, and one present or a card with a few dollar bills. Best birthdays ever!
Vacation was every summer, usually Florida, stopping by in Baltimore to visit my grandmother, who called him "sonny" and cried as we left, then on to Brunswick, Georgia to visit with Froggie, dad's old baseball coach--Best fried chicken ever! And the sunny beaches of Florida where we made years of happy, funny, and sometimes scary memories like when Timmy was nearly drowned at 9 and then we left him at a gas station, sometimes the car would break down, or our stuff on the cartop carrier would start flying off onto the road, too many memories to even remember.
Growing up, there were few rules, my personal favorite was "Never hit your sister," which meant Joey couldn't hit me back"; Never talk back to your mother," "Never slam a door in anger," in fact, we weren't allowed to be angry period; "Mass on Sunday always and forever, no matter what!", "Behave when visiting others."; better be home before the streetlights come on, or dad whistles from the front porch, whichever was first.
He was faithful to God, kind, loving, hard working, fun loving, athletic, protective of his family, generous, mischievous, young at heart, and so in love with my mother to the day he died in the arms of my brother David and me. His legacy of love and kindness has had a profoundly positive effect on the lives of his children, and he will live on in our hearts.

I am praying for all of you. I have so many great memories of Joe from my childhood. Joe always had a nickname for me and always made me laugh. I'll never forget when he would stand on the porch and whistle when it was time for the kids to come home. I don't think there was a time that I went to your house and did not see him under a car 'fixing' something. Whether he worked on a car or assembled something he always ended up with 'extra' parts. I remember how adamant he was about everyone going to church every week. He was such a hard worker, amazing father and wonderful husband and provider. He was such a gentle man. God bless.
