Stephen Hunter Obituary

Stephen D. Hunter, 67, passed away peacefully at his home in Greensburg Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, surrounded by his family. Fondly known as Steve, Hunter, or Poppa by his adoring grandchildren, he is survived by his wife, Ann; children Seth and Jessica; son-in-law, Nathaniel; and grandchildren, Jackson and Weston. Steve is preceded in death by his mother, Marie; and aunt, Germaine.Steve's professional work was devoted to providing healthcare with compassion. As pharmacist and co-owner of a Connellsville community pharmacy with his wife, Ann, Steve worked for over 40 years to provide excellent care to his customers. In addition to the rigors of owning and operating an independent business, Steve gave back by training pharmacy student interns from Duquesne University (his alma mater). He also participated in mission work with the Friends of the Children in Haiti organization, helping children through treatment of a variety of conditions. French by birth and Italian by marriage, Steve had a romantic heart and great passion for the joys of life. He loved nothing more than gathering with his family for a good meal and bottle of wine, laughing loud and telling stories. He found solace in time spent outside, from local hikes and parks to ski trips and time in the mountains - he was equally at home with a day at the Springs as well as some of the biggest mountains in the U.S. and Canada. Steve also got to see his young grandsons embrace skiing, the sport he so loved. Apart from active life, Steve equally valued downtime and relaxing with a good book by the fire. He perfected the art of making a bowl of popcorn (browned butter being the key ingredient), could quote the movies Butch Cassidy and White Christmas forwards and backwards, and spent more time researching the Steelers draft possibilities than anyone employed by the team. Later in life, he revisited a hobby from his youth, painting metal figures for use as chess sets, and lovingly made chess sets for his family to use and remember him by. A lover of movies, books and music, Steve had a story, anecdote or quote for any situation. He was fond of a Jack London quote: "The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time." Those who loved him will miss him dearly, but Steve surely made the most of the time he had. Family and friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the LOPATICH-BRINKER FUNERAL HOME LLC, 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Grace Church, Greensburg. Everyone is asked to please go directly to church. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve's honor to the Friends of the Children in Haiti organization (fotcoh.org). One of the most wonderful men I had the privilege of getting to know through his work as a Pharmacist. How very fortunate to call him Friend. A lover of life, family and all the things that mattered. Sending much love to Ann and Family. My deepest, heartfelt sympathy.
