Kenneth Smalling

1943 - 2016

Kenneth "Dutch" Smalling, 72, of Vandergrift, left us to join his dearly missed wife Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at the Wexford House, surrounded by his loved ones. Born Sept. 12, 1943, in Philadelphia, Dutch was a Vietnam War veteran of the Marine Corps. Upon retiring from the USMC, Dutch opened his own contracting company, Challenge Unlimited, which has been passed on to son. He enjoyed spending time with his family, was extremely proud of all of his grandchildren, meeting people and had a goal of making people feel happier after spending a few moments with him. Sergeant Dutch is survived by his daughter, Anya Pikul (Joe), of Pittsburgh, Thor Smalling (Shannon), of Fredericksburg, Va., Sonja Gonzalez (John), of Patterson, Calif., Dag Smalling (Elicia), of Lower Burrell, Davey Hausmann (Elysa), of Los Fresnos, Texas, Lorraine Rahm, of Charles Town, W. Va., and Erik Smalling (Lisa), of Upper Burrell; and his brother, Elmer Smalling (Cassandra), of Seattle, Wash. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Vivien, Jaired, Sierra, DJ, Jayden, Kierra, Jared, Jonathon, John, Leeona, Zach and Karisa. He was preceded in death by his mother, his father and his beloved wife, Ellen Smalling.
Funeral services are private. Arrangements have been entrusted to the DUNMIRE-KERR & ROWE FUNERAL HOME INC., 244 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift. A memorial service will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at Primo Event Hall in Vandergrift, to celebrate his birthday and his life.
Daddy, enjoy dancing with Mom again and know that we'll "drop a bomb" for you to dance to a time or two. We will miss you incredibly until we see you again. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
