Shirley Hook Obituary

Shirley M. (Everett) Hook, 94, of Latrobe, passed away on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, at Loyalhanna Senior Suites. Born Dec. 30, 1929, in Latrobe, she was a daughter of the late Arthur L. Everett and Esther M. (Carr) Everett. Shirley had been a member of the former Latrobe United Methodist Church. Prior to her retirement, she was the longtime marriage license clerk in the Register of Wills Office at the Westmoreland County Courthouse. Shirley loved to travel, and over the years, she and her husband John enjoyed many trips all over the United States, as well as many cruises. Many of those trips were centered around John's Navy reunions, where she forged many lifelong friendships with families of the other shipmates. In her later years, she became an avid reader. With a sharp mind and a love of knowledge, she always remained up to date with current events, and could easily carry on a conversation on almost any topic. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John G. Hook, on March 11, 2010; three brothers, Arthur C., Jay Leroy, and William Gerald Everett; and two infant sisters, Hilda Jane, and Mary Esther Everett. Shirley is survived by one son, John A. Hook, and his wife Patricia, of Latrobe; one daughter, Kathleen L. Brinker, and her husband Vincent, of Latrobe; two grandchildren, Jason J. Brinker, and his wife Hannah, and Katie L. Smeltzer, and her husband Andrew, all of Unity Township; and three adorable great-grandchildren who brought much joy to her life, Abigail Mae Smeltzer, Charlotte Rose Brinker, and Steven Vincent Brinker. She is also survived by a nephew and nieces. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Loyalhanna Senior Suites, who were so kind and took such wonderful care of Shirley these past few years. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the LOPATICH-BRINKER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 601 Weldon Street, Latrobe. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Mike Bobula officiating. Interment will follow at Unity Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Latrobe Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 266, Latrobe, PA 15650, www.latrobehistory.org/donate, or to the Greater Latrobe Partners In Education Foundation, 1816 Lincoln Avenue, Latrobe, PA 15650, www.glpief.org/donate.
