DORIS LARSON Obituary

DORIS MAXINE LARSON Doris Maxine Larson, born April 21, 1926 in Gig Harbor, passed away on April 27, 2009, after a beautiful day of clam digging on the Washington coast. The cause was a cerebral hemorrhage, and she passed quickly, collapsing onto a beach that she had frequented and enjoyed over many years. Doris enjoyed an array of outdoor activities related to her life around Puget Sound, including fishing, clam digging, boating, and camping in the San Juan Islands. She was a self-taught musician with a wonderful voice, and a gifted writer of poems, children's stories, and songs, some of the latter which she performed on KUOW radio. She was the consummate hostess, known for her hospitality, warmth, and great sense of humor. Doris graduated from Roy High School where she was a cheerleader and also active in many sports. She lived most of her life in the greater Tacoma area before moving to Fox Island 38 years ago. She retired from American Plywood Association of Tacoma after 26 years as an Administrative Assistant. Doris will be deeply missed by her high school sweetheart and husband for 64 years, Verner Larson; her son Gary Larson and his wife Toni Carmichael of Seattle; and her sister Lois Miller of Fox Island. Doris was preceded in death by her son Daniel Larson in 1994. Memorial Services will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 9th at Fox Island United Church of Christ, 726 6th Avenue, Fox Island. Private Graveside Services will be held at Fox Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Fox Island Historical Museum, P.O. Box 242, Fox Island, WA 98333. Arrangements are by Haven of Rest (253) 851-9991.

One of my favorite childhood memories: I believe it was me and Brent, we were heading over to the Fox Island house from the cabin in the Whaler. As we were cruising along the beach we spotted Uncle Vern and Aunt Doris, he was pushing her in the tree swing, they were laughing and smiling, they might as well have been on their second date. Everything about them was alive, in love and wrapped up in happiness. Once Brent and I pulled the boat up Aunt Doris made us rootbeer floats and we hung out at the beach. It was the best day, full of love and happiness. I will never forget that moment in my life. Thank you Aunt Doris, I love you.

I worked at American Plywood with Doris in the late 60s and remember her as being an executive secretary of many talents. She always had a smile on her face and was very accomodating to the many questions I had about the Association and helping me to carry out the performance of my job. My sympathy and prayers are with her family.

Doris was the head secretary when I started at APA in June of 1979 - I remember she was very gracious and helpful, and always had a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed.
