Rev. Dr. Huldah Isobel Buntain
November 21, 1924 - July 2, 2021
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - Courage and tenacity were the hallmarks of Huldah Isobel Buntain, who committed her long and fruitful life to the service of others and to the people of India whom she dearly loved.
Dr. Buntain was born in Tokyo, Japan to missionary parents and grew to adulthood in Vancouver, Canada where she closely witnessed compassion for the poor at her family's downtown church and shelter. Through her parents' ministry, she would meet and marry Mark Buntain, a young charismatic evangelist. The couple spent their first nine years of marriage as traveling evangelists throughout much of America and Canada.
In 1954, Drs. Huldah and Mark Buntain traveled to Kolkata, India with their infant daughter, Bonnie, to serve as missionaries for one year. The dire humanitarian needs that they found upon arrival compelled them to action and they would both spend the rest of their lives living in India working tirelessly for those in need. Their second daughter, Maureen, joined their family in 1977 from Indian heritage.
Dr. Buntain's humanitarian and spiritual impact cannot be easily overstated. In total, she and her husband founded over 700 churches, 200 primary, secondary, higher education, and vocational schools, several children's homes, meals programs for as many as 20,000 people daily, an accredited school of nursing, a full-service hospital, and health clinic network that has served over 2.2 million patients, and she was the first woman appointed minister in India by her church. For her contributions, commitment and courage, Dr. Buntain was awarded an honorary Doctorate.
She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, three grandsons and their wives, four great-grandchildren, and by the countless people in India and around the world to whom she will always be known as "Aunty Buntain."
