John Lloyd Obituary

John (Jack) Edward Lloyd
May 20, 1935 - December 29, 2022
Tacoma, Washington - John (Jack) Lloyd passed away on December 29, 2022, in Puyallup, Washington. He was born on May 20, 1935, in Ritzville, Washington and graduated from West Valley High School in Spokane. He went on to attend Central Washington University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1957. He started teaching in Forks, Washington, before moving to Tacoma in 1964 and teaching music at Mason Junior High. In 1966, he took over the band program at Stadium High School. During his 34 years there, the band won countless awards. They traveled to Europe in 1972 and 1977, with trumpet virtuoso Rafael Mendez as a guest soloist. They were Washington State's representative at the National Bicentennial Celebration in Philadelphia/Washington, D.C. in 1987 and traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia in 1993, and also Australia in 1996. In addition to his work at Stadium, Jack taught at Grant and Lowell Elementary schools and conducted at the University of Puget Sound and the Puget Sound Music Society. He was honored by the National Band Association in 1980, receiving its Citation of Excellence Award and was inducted into the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame in 2002. He retired in 2000 but remained active for many years in community affairs and was an honorary member of the Tacoma Kiwanis Club. He spent much of his retirement caring for his spectacular rose and rhododendron gardens and was an avid Mariners fan. He is preceded in death by his wife Delia, his brother Robert Lloyd and his parents Cecil and Mollie Lloyd. He is survived by two children, James Lloyd of Tacoma, Jennifer Hayden (Mike) of Puyallup, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There will be a private family burial. A public memorial will be announced at a later date. For information, please check the Jack Lloyd Memorial Page on Facebook.

Mr Lloyd was my band instructor from 93'-97' and earlier while attending 5th grade class at Lowell elementary. I remember that first day of school my freshman year at Stadium, I was nervous, as any freshman typically is, it's a big transition from middle to high school. The moment I walked through the door to his class, I heard from the back of the room where he had a small office "Mr. Mitchell!" He recognized me from elementary school as well as my last name, as he had also taught my older siblings before me. He was not against the occasional use of a mild curse word in the presence of studentsif the situation called for it. I recall him saying in that moment "Damn! How many of you Mitchell's are there? " The familiar face and his welcoming demeanor aided me in calming my nerves on that first day of school.
Throughout my time at Stadium I would often skip classes that I had no interest in suffering through. I could almost always be found in the band room sitting in with the other bands, learning whatever music they were playing. Mr Lloyd always welcomed me whether I was in that specific class or not, sometimes spending as many as four solid hours with him! He was an amazing person that taught me so much about life and music. He will be forever missed.

Mr. Lloyd was my first band teacher when I was a fifth grader at Lowell Elementary School. I was determined to be his student in High School, too. He put up with me and encouraged me and that's what a good instructor does. I now share a passion for music because of my relationships with my fellow High School classmates. We went through the school of Lloyd's hard knocks. "Practice at home, not here!", he would shout.

I feel fortunate to have had Mr. Lloyd as a teacher of mine for my four years at Stadium. I was in band with Nicholas Senn and echo his comments. Mr. Lloyd was a tremendous teacher, mentor, and instructor. The lessons we learned from Mr. Lloyd extended far beyond the classroom. They were life lessons and had a meaningfully positive impact on my life. May he rest in peace.

Jack Lloyd was an extraordinary band director, educator and high achiever! I was fortunate enough to be a member of his Stadium High School Concert Band that was invited to compete in Vienna during the summer of 1972, over 50 years ago. Additionally, we performed throughout Europe with world famous trumpet player Raphael Mendez! This was an experience of a lifetime for a 17 year old kid from Tacoma. I will forever be grateful to Jack and want to express my heartfelt condolences to his family!

I'm just one of the thousands whose lives were made better and richer by "Mr. Lloyd" at Stadium HS.
Thanks for the inspiration to have music be my priority in life!

I have had many great teachers in my life, he was the best. That´s no exaggeration. I was kind of a goof off in class. He knew how to handle me, but when things were serious, they were serious. I always respected him and I know he knew it too.
