MARILYN SAVAGE Obituary

Marilyn Savage Marilyn Savage served as UFCW Local 141 President from July 1993 to October, 2011. Marilyn passed away Saturday, October 29th, 2011 at her home. Marilyn started her career as a Registered Nurse in 1970, when she graduated from St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Yakima, where she continued to work until 1972, when she moved to Australia, where her mother was from. Marilyn worked at Epping Hospital in Sydney for a year. She returned to the states and worked at St. Peter's in Olympia until 1993, when she became President of UFCW Local 141. People remember Marilyn as a kind, compassionate woman who cared about people's issues. As one Nursing Administrator said, "Her quiet influence will be sorely missed." She was a strong organizer and provided leadership to Local 141, utilizing her nursing critical thinking skills. She served on the Washington Center for Nursing Board and the Advisory Board for South Puget Sound Community College. Her family and USNU will be establishing a scholarship fund for nursing continuing education in memory of Marilyn Savage. The Marilyn Savage Nursing Scholarship is to honor the memory and service of Marilyn Savage, UFCW Local 141 in coordination with South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) and the Savage Family is beginning a scholarship for Nursing Students attending SPSCC, the 'Marilyn Savage Nursing Scholarship'. This Scholarship will be available to all first and second year Nursing Students with a 3.0 or better GPA and will be selected from the pool of applicants based on academic merit and need. Local 141 has always encouraged the development of new nurses, and this is another way that we can help make a lasting difference in the profession. More information on the scholarship will be distributed when it goes active later this year. You can donate directly to the Marilyn Savage Nursing Scholarship Fund through South Puget Sound Community College Foundation, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia, WA 98512, and SPSCC can be reached at 360-596-5229. Local 141 will also be contributing a start-up stipend to the SPSCC Scholarship Fund, and we hope to have this fund be available indefinitely to help foster Puget Sound Nursing Students.
