Michael Smitherman Obituary
May 5, 1956 - June 28, 2024
Lakewood, Washington - Michael Smitherman, a native of Pierce County and a resident of DuPont, WA departed this life on Friday June 28th in Lakewood, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Willie Joel and Opal Smitherman and by his brothers Joel and Senator William(Bill)Smitherman. He gave his life to Christ at an early age. He was a loyal member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy. He later became a member of the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Lakes High School in 1974 where he was on the track team. He received his Bachelors Degree from Mobile University in Mobile, AL. Michael worked as a Psychiatric Child Care Counselor at Western State Hospital. He retired after 27 years. He is survived by his wife Lucretia of 45 year's, his sons Michael and Martin(Ashton)Smitherman; grandson Silas Smitherman; granddaughters Tajanáe and Asa Smitherman; his sister Welthea Smitherman Taylor (Michael). Many nieces , nephews, in-laws , a host of friends, and brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Viewing will be held on Thursday July 11, 2024 from 10 a.m. until the funeral at 12noon.

Mike was my friend at St. Leo's many years ago. I still remember him tap dancing on stage one day; and I was just amazed at his grace. It's good to know I'll see him in the heavenly kingdom soon.

Mike was one of the good guys... He brought humor and smiles... Mike was old school... He said once, "I'm an old computer". We shared memories of Red Fox, The Jeffresons, The Sugar Hill Gang, The Jackson 5, Old school music, Tap Dancing, Jokes... Sooo many Jokes... Mike cared for kids & cared for his Wife & Family... For now he is missed but we will see him again one day and it will be fun!
