SALLY NIXON-LYONS Obituary

Sally Ann Nixon-Lyons Sally Nixon, beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend died peacefully surrounded by family on June 24, 2009. Sally passed following a long valiantly fought battle against ovarian cancer which taught her and those she loved the important things in life. Sally was born to Robert and Joyce Nixon on April 8, 1956 in Aberdeen, WA. then moved to Silverdale as a toddler. She experienced a wonderful childhood with her close family-camping on the Olympic Peninsula and trips to the Oregon Coast were lifetime favorites. She graduated from Central Kitsap H.S. in 1974 and completed a B.A. degree from Central Washington University, where she met her future husband Scott. She later completed her certificate in Aging and her Masters in Social Work from the University of Washington. Sally spent 30 years working in the field of Aging. She was extremely committed to her career which included 8 years as Social Service Director at Martha and Mary Nursing Home and over 20 years with Pierc e County in the Aging and Long Term care program. Sally married Scott Lyons on May 6, 1985 on the island of Maui. Scott truly brought joy and laughter to Sally's life. They shared a passion for collecting antiques and gardening. Their son Conner, born in 1993 added a whole new dimension of love and being a parent was by far a top rated life experience. Sally was preceded in death by her sister Mona Kulani. She is survived by her husband Scott Lyons, son Conner, parents Robert and Joyce Nixon of Chico, WA.,mother-in-law Mary Felts of Port Orchard, brothers Tracy (Leisa) Nixon of Port Orchard and Scott (Shari) Nixon of Chehalis, brother-in-law Grant (Gina) Lyons of Gig Harbor and numerous nieces and nephews. A beautiful Celebration of Life was held in Sally's honor on July 11, 2009 in Port Orchard. Family members, friends, and professional peers filled the hall beyond capacity to remember her.

I will miss her greatly and hope that those that knew her will honor her memory as she requested in her obituary in lieu of flowers - by spending time loving their families.

A typical loving request by such a wonderful woman. Aloha Pumehana, Sally, it was my honor to have known you in this life.

When I first met Sally I thought what a beautiful lady, she dressed well and completed it with beautiful jewelry and a wonderful smile. The more we talked the beauty of what a wonderful person she was shined through and I enjoyed talking to her. Sally was so devoted to meeting the needs of others. Her staff always had the most respect for her, she gave of herself freely and gave them the respect they deserved. Sally will always be close to all of us; as she touched so many lives. We all feel a great loss, but know she is at peace now. To her family, our prayers are with you now and always. The Deli Staff will always remember you Sally as strong, caring, loving, and beautiful.

Sally interviewed me for a temporary position. She was professional and kind and we shared a knowing smile when she said that she also had a teenage son - her face lit up. I'm sure she was a great mom. I know that she was an amazing manager at ALTC. You must be so proud of her.

Peace to her family and loved ones. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I knew Sally because we were both Area Agency on Aging Directors for 13 years. Sally brought an unparalleled concern for clients and their needs. It was always the most important thing in any debate. We will miss Sally and are thinking of the family

I was so sad to read of Sally’s passing. I knew Sally back in the late 1980s and early 90s when I worked at St. Joseph Hospital and she was with Aging and Long Term Care. I was always impressed by her professionalism, kindness, and grace. Even though I retired many years ago and did not keep in touch, I have never forgotten her; she is someone who can not be forgotten.
Sally used to laugh with me that we were Nixon and Reagan…both at the same meeting! She was so warm and accepting.

Reading the obituary I learned there was so much I did not know about Sally.
Today I was struck by some similarities. Sally was just three months older than my daughter, also born in 1956. In August last year my daughter passed away after a seven year unrelenting struggle with ovarian cancer also.

My condolences goes out to the family, I know you will miss her so much. I trust your wonderful memories will help to comfort you.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of Sally’s loved ones.

Sally was one of the gentlest, kindest people I have ever known. She was the best manager I've ever worked for (out of 14). She hired people that she thought could do the job and let them do that job. Her door was always open when I needed help. She managed by example. She was "the greatest".

I remember first meeting Sally back in 1993 before I worked at PC ALTC. Never thought so many years ago I'd be working with (almost 11 years) this amazing woman. She leaves a legacy and will be an inspiration to many of us to continue her vision to serve the Aging community of Pierce County.

Sally was such an advocate for senior services and supportive activities for aging. I had the opportunity to work with Sally on a number of video projects, public service announcements, and events surrounding Aging and Long Term Care in Pierce County. Her energy and willingness to be innovative will be missed. My thoughts are with Scott and Conner and the entire family.

I was an Office Assistant II when Sally joined our agency. It was very difficult for her to give us certain jobs to do--like copying, stuffing envelopes, etc. We would beg her to give us those tasks. If she did ask something of us, she never called us to her. She always came to us, then would apologize for bothering us.

I remember when Sally became pregnant. She was so happy and overjoyed!

I will miss Sally so much. I pray that the family will find peace and comfort in each other. They will have wonderful memories of Sally.

I'm so sad to hear about Sally's passing. I didn't know her well but in the limited contact we had (on an elder abuse prevention committee some years ago), she impressed me with her kindness, professionalism, grace and dedication. I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers go out to your family.
