SARAH SLOAT Obituary

Dr. Sarah C. "Sally" Sloat May 5, 1924 - August 17, 2010 Born and raised in Lyons, New York. Graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, University of Connecticut, and the University of Washington. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Delta Delta. Sally loved the Northwest and officially became a transplant after accepting a job as a clinical psychologist at Cascadia Juvenile Center, and eventually retired from McNeil Island Corrections Center in 1996. Dedicated to the environment, nature, politics, and performing arts - the many causes she supported are endless. A pioneer in recycling and gardening organically before they became common practice, she lived the life she believed in. Though her accomplishments were great, they did not define her life. She was a consummate study of the human condition, and made it her life's goal to surround herself with loving family and friends. Always mindful and sensitive to those troubled or in need, Sal was a guardian for humanity. Her loving care was boundless, and even extended to the neighborhood raccoons and a few stray cats. Sally imprinted countless lives, and will be deeply missed by her family and friends: daughter Rhonda Knight (John), granddaughter Sarah Solis (Rennie), great-grandson Lucien (Sally's pride and joy), and granddaughters Rielly and Jaime O'Neill, as well as special friends BT Wilkey, Lawrence Wilkey, Dean and Neitha Wilkey, Pat and Frank Collinge, the Collinge kids (to whom she was always "Aunt" Sally) John, Alan, and Julie Collinge-Eggerding (Tom), Clare Lanusse and Brodie Kelly, Rylla Goldberg, Harvey Scharf, Thelma Gilmur, Betty Bruce, and many, many others. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Tahoma Audubon Society, 2917 Morrison Road W. Donations in her memory may be made to Tahoma Audubon Society.

“Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.”

Hope you are happy, Sal.
Love always, Mo

As a co-worker of Sally for 25 years and a friend for many more, I will miss her greatly. Although I live in North Carolina, I spoke by phone with Sally on a frequent basis and always enjoyed our conversations about birds, squirrels, her garden, the weather in Tacoma and N.C., planning for yet another Cascadia/McNeil gathering, other co-workers, people who had passed and those who were ill I am sad for those of us who will miss Sally, but pleased that she passed quietly. My her memory be eternal.
