STEVEN CORRIGAN Obituary

October 8, 1951-August 12, 2009

Steve died peacefully at home August 12 after a short battle with cancer. Steve was born in Pasco, WA., to Rita and Patrick Michael Corrigan on October 8, 1951. After attending Pasco schools, Steve served in the United States Army.

Steve found camaraderie volunteering for the American Legion and veterans centers in St. Louis, MO., and most recently at his new home in Peoria, AZ. Steve loved taking long motorcycle rides with his buddies visiting veterans centers and helping those in need. Steve sewed 'do-rags' and donated them to veterans wherever he went. Steve donated his time and energy whenever needed. During the first Gulf War, Steve waited at the USO at the airport to greet the soldiers returning back home. Most of his donations were provided in private for those in need without any recognition. Steve most recently donated his time to several cancer centers in Phoenix and provided the children with do-rags. Recently, they held a memorial service in Steve's honor for all the charity work that Steve provided.

A number of years ago when Steve had learned of the vandalism of the Veterans Memorial in Kennewick, WA, he raised money and had it sent to the veterans there for restoration efforts.

Steve lived many years in St. Louis, MO, before moving to Peoria, AZ. Sandy, his loving wife of 32 years, as well as his stepsons Paul of St. Louis, and Mark of Phoenix, survive Steve. He is also survived by his mother Rita Swan and step-father Bob Swan of Kennewick; brother Patrick M. Corrigan of Mexico; sisters Kelly CorriganScott (Mark Scott) of Kennewick; Leslie (Richard) Adelstein of Bellingham; Peggy (Dale) Brown of Prosser; and Mary Charney of Kennewick; as well as 3 nieces and one nephew. He adored his grandchildren Dustin, Madison, Christopher, and Ava. His grandmother Mamie Drafahl, and mother-in-law Molly Cohn, predeceased Steve.

The funeral service will be held at National Memorial Cemetery on Friday, August 21, 2009, at 11 a.m., and the memorial service will be at the American Legion Post 29 on Saturday, August 22, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 6822 N. 57th Dr., Glendale, AZ.

In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to help defray burial expenses. You can go to any Bank of America Branch and donate to the Steve Corrigan Memorial Fund.

I traveled with all my sisters and my mom to bit farewell to our beloved brother Steve. His funeral and memorial were amazing testimonies to who he was, his commitment to helping cancer patients, and his loyalty to his country and to his fellow veterans. I was struck by the outpouring of support for Steve and for us. One could not help but be overcome with emotion upon seeing his fellow veterans and friends line up their motorcycles and greet us upon our arrival at the funeral home, followed by the procession to the national cemetary. To see the American flags flying in the wind guiding us to his resting place tore at our hearts. I will never forget the outpouring of support shown to my family as we struggled to accept our loss. It was and is incredibly comforting to realize Steve had another wonderful family of friends in Arizona. May God bless him. He is missed terribly.

Our family just got back from the 2 day event in Steve's honor in Phoenix. He was buried in the Phoenix federal cemetary. He had a wonderful procession from the mortuary to the cemetary from the motorcycle group he rode with and then the next day the VFW post he was a member of put on a wonderful tribute to him. Both groups definetly honored him and recognized him as one of their brothers.

Steve was and always will be a viable part of our family. We miss him terribly. He was such a friend to the VFW and returning war vets. His sisters.
