Donald Armstrong Obituary

Donald Gene Armstrong INDIAN LAND, SC - Donald Gene Armstrong, 64, passed away on June 27, at his residence in South Carolina. He was the husband of Donna (Cornell) Armstrong, his high school sweetheart who he married in August of 1970. Don was born on March 23, 1952, in Bennington, Vermont son of the late Raymond and Bettie (Hilliard) Armstrong. He was educated at schools in Vermont and served in the Army National Guard for six years. Don was formerly employed as a service tech for Stanley Doors. Don and Donna lived in Vermont until 1995, when he built their home in Buskirk, NY and moved to South Carolina 2 years ago. An avid Harley Davidson fan, Don and Donna became the leaders of the pack when it came to riding, camping, and motorcycle trips with all their friends. Don was a talented jack of all trades when it came to any work with your hands. He built two houses from the ground up, kept all the family cars running through the years, and constructed many outbuildings at their home in NY. In his early retirement he opened a motorcycle repair and storage garage to stay busy doing something he loved. Don was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and after treatment for Lyme disease in India in 2013, he and Donna moved to South Carolina to be closer to family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, brother and uncle, and he will be deeply missed. Survivors other than his wife Donna include their children Amy Cole (Mark) of Waxhaw, NC, Jason Armstrong (Kris Kilayko) of Oakland, CA and Tim Armstrong (Jessie Grogan) of Summerville, MA, grandchildren Patrick, Hayley, Faith and Rebekah Cole, Grady and Ellie Armstrong, Stella Armstrong and Aurora Grogan, brothers Keith Armstrong and Herb Armstrong (Judy) all of Pownal, VT, also survived by several neices and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday July 6, at 1:00 pm from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, New York. Burial will follow the service at West Hoosick Rural Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday July 5 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to ALS Association through the funeral home.

I've only just found this beautiful obituary today, but it feels like just yesterday Grampa Armstrong was throwing me in the pool, and tickling me until my sides hurt from laughing. And baking with him and Grandma Armstrong, riding his four-wheeler all around the backyard, to swinging with him on the swingset. I miss you so much Gramps, more and more each day.
Love, Stella.

I along with all past and present employees at the Connecticut branch of Stanley door are very saddened to hear word of Don's passing. We spent many a working day in Don's presence and we are all the better for it. One of the nicest people you would ever meet. We were fortunate to be able call him a fellow employee but more privileged to be able to call him a friend, many of us here sharing a love of motorcycles and with Don . We send our heart felt condolences to Don's family and friends. Ride in peace brother.

Donna and family, I'm so sorry for your loss. 64 is much too young. I was in awe of Don's leadership on our 2003 ride to Milwaukee. I remember you both fondly. Embrace your memories. Take care. My condolences.
