Arthur Hatheway Obituary

HATHEWAY, Arthur Loyal, born in Los Angeles on March 26, 1940 to Philip and Pauline Hatheway, went suddenly to Jesus on October 11, 2008. He is survived by his loving daughters, Catherine Ann Page (Dale); grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Elizabeth and Alan, and Helen Ann Page (Danny); grandchildren, Taylor Destynie, Taylor Grey, Laney Michelle, and his devoted wife, Roselyn Robinson Hatheway who joined him in marriage in June of 1995. He will also be missed by Rose's daughter, Terice Pokrant (Jeff), son, Jeffrey Richards (Tiffany), and all her grandchildren. Art always excelled in studies and was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis following which he served our country, a decorated Naval Officer. In 2006, Art retired from his position as Senior Staff Engineer at the AMS Lab in the Physics Department at U of A. There his skills as computer programmer and small instrument engineer, his thorough nature and precise workmanship, his understanding of chemistry and physics, as well as his abilities to invent and mentor, were put to good use. Art met Jesus in 1992. This new relationship changed his perspective on life, and today he knows completely the goodness of God. Art treasured his friends of The Wednesday Breakfast Group. They will miss him too - he encouraged us all to think.

Art was a lab student of mine 25 years ago. He was a great student and a great friend. May his memory be eternal.

Art certainly challenged my intellect on several occasions throughout the years that we engaged in discourse at Vox Popoli.

We certainly did not see "eye-to-eye" on many things of import to each other. However, I can say with confidence that we appreciated each other's point-of-view. And, certainly learned from each other.

I'm going to miss Art. Didn't realize until recently, that he was that much older than me. I'm going to have to consider him as one of my mentors, until we can re-engage properly in Paradise...

I can't say that I knew Art well, but I frequented the same blog (Vox Popoli) that he did, and participated in many conversations in which he took part. As I said over at Vox's, Art came across as a good and intelligent man who consistently made useful or insightful comments.

We'll miss his presence among us. No doubt the conversations have been diminished by his absence.

The silver lining of this sad time is that he knew Jesus as his Savior. I can think of nothing more joyful than knowing that a friend or acquaintance is one of our Lord's children. I know that he's in a better place, where no sorrow or suffering exists. And for those of us who know Christ, we have the added anticipation of someday meeting in person one whom we never met in life.

May God bless and keep his family and loved ones in this trying time, and in times to come.

Our deepest sympathy to Art's family and friends. We are shocked at this sudden event. It was only last month we talked to Art about our Amphi 50th reunion which is coming up next week and we had hoped to see him there.

Art's contribution at Vox Day's blog revealed a great mind and a great heart. Art's thoughtful comments will be sorely missed for the time being. This chapter is over. The best is yet to come. For now, condolences, for eternity - joy.

I only knew Art through Vox's blog and was surprised and saddened when his daughter informed us of his passing. Although I didn't personally know Art, his intelligence, integrity and Christian ideals were evident in his comments on the blog. Art was a man that I would have been honored to know in real life.

I'm very sorry for your loss. May God be with you.

I am Art's oldest daughter. Hopefully I can carry his legacy on with at least half the love, grace, honor and strength he did. What a lucky kid I am. I will miss him enormously.

Art was my best friend. His influence on my life will last forever. He was one of the best men I have ever known, and his passing is at once both a great loss and a great victory. He loved Christ above all, and he will now enjoy the peace for which he longed. I'll be seeing you, my friend.

My prayers are with your family as you experience this time of grief. May you feel Jesus' love upholding you. I was always glad to have a conversation with Art in the Physics Main Office.

My prayers for the loving support of Art's family and friends. What a tremendous loss for earth and gain for heaven. Art's sharing of his faith is a very central reason for my personal conversion. He will always be in my prayers. I know he touched hundreds if not thousands with his kindness and faith.

I am writing this on behalf of all Art's former colleagues at the U of A. We are all shocked to hear of his untimely death. We wish Rose and all his family well in the difficult time.
