Bart Morse Obituary

Bart Morse a longtime University of Arizona art professor and an accomplished watercolor painter has died. He was 71. He died Tuesday at his home in Newberg, OR after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Bart Jennings Morse was born in Sandy, Utah in 1938, along with his fraternal twin Bert, to Helen Dee Labrum and Jennings Bryan Morse. Raised in a log cabin on the family farm, Morse saw education as a way to leave his rural roots. As a youngster, he was an avid reader and had a potent visual memory. He was introduced to abstract expressionism by his Jordan High School art teacher Don Olsen, who had in turn studied with Hans Hofmann in New York. Morse's mature style was figurative and largely landscape-based, but also distinctive in its highly personal use of color, surface, and imagery. He went on to earn a BS from BYU, and his MFA in painting from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1964. He served in the Army Reserve. He married Leslie Jean Frey in 1960 in the Salt Lake Temple and they were the parents of five children. The family settled in Tucson in 1970 when Morse took an assistant professor position at UA. Over the years he managed the painting and printmaking departments, overhauling and adding several large presses for students; he also undertook scholarly research on Aboriginal art in Australia and European watercolorists before retiring in 2002. Morse enjoyed teaching and encouraged students to make the most of their university resources, particularly the library. He considered Bruce McGrew and Doug Denniston to be influential local colleagues who shared his passion for watercolor. Morse's work is in numerous public and private collections including The University of Arizona Art Museum and the Tucson Museum of Art. He was shown in over 60 individual and group shows during his career. An enthusiastic and energetic outdoorsman, Morse loved backpacking, hunting, and fishing, and the photographs and drawings that he made on these outings became source material for his varied artistic output, which included collage, printmaking, and oil painting. He was particularly fond of the remote geography of Northern Arizona and Southern Utah and also of the petroglyphs and pictographs made by the Fremont and Anasazi. Throughout the 1990s Morse made seven trips as the interpretive artist with the National Forest Service's archaeological documentation program 'Passport in Time.' Morse is survived by his wife, Leslie; daughters, Maury, Brooke and Magen; sons, Marc and Aaron; his brother, Bert Morse; and seven grandchildren. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 at Lake Hills Memorial Mortuary Cemetery in Sandy, UT. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the local food bank or curepsp.org.

Leslie, perhaps you remember me as a faculty wife, and later faculty, from the U of A art department. When I lived in Illinois, I had heard from Wayne Entice that he was ill. Now I've returned to Tucson, and was so sorry to read his recent obituary in the paper. Please accept my sympathy for your loss. All my best wishes to you and your family.

Dear Leslie: Don't know if you remember me at the U of W. But I have wondered about you and Bart for many years. I knew you were in Arizona, but didn't know much more. I am so sorry to hear about Bart's death. I offer you my love and support at this difficult time. I wish I had known in time to come to the funeral but I just found out a few hours too late. Lotsa water under the bridge since those University days. But I remember them with great fondness. Life was simple then, though we thought it complicated.

Love and best wishes,

Howard

To family of Bart Morse -
My husband, Myron "Mike" Morse, saw Bart's obituary in the Arizona Daily Star. Mike met Bart, his cousin once removed, years ago in Washington when Bart was going to school there. About the time we moved to Tucson, Bart had retired. Though we didn't have opportunity to become better acquainted with Bart and family, we heard wonderful reports about his paintings from Mike's sister, Maxine.
The two of us send our sympathy.

I was fortunate to be in several of Bart's art classes at the UA. It's been 10 years, but when I gather with fellow alumni we always end up telling Bart stories. Not just a good teacher - a real hoot! So sorry for your loss.

Hi, Leslie: I seemed to lose contact after Bart's retirement and your move to Oregon. However your family frequently was in my thoughts due to daily seeing one of Bart's watercolors, plus an early Aaron watercolor/collage in my home. [Thank you Aaron for including the site for viewing more of your father's artworks -- I've also wondered how your own art progresses.] Finally, my sincere sympathy to your family at the loss of an outstanding family member within a truly outstanding family. I so enjoyed being co-worker and friend. Much, much affection.

To Bart's family. I was sad to hear of Bart's passing. I met Bart & Bert at Sandy elementary in fourth grade. I enjoyed them both throughout elementary, jr high and finally Jordan High. I was fortunate to win one of his paintings at a reunion and had purchased one at an art gallery in Park City. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

To the Morse Family,
Sorry to hear of Bart's passing. I have heard many stories that my Dad (Jay) has shared with me of his childhood growing up on the farm with Bart, Bert and Jimmy. The times I did see Bart he was very nice to me.
Take Care.
