Benjamin Lazarow Obituary

Benjamin W. Lazarow Passed away January 21, 2008 at 89 years of age. He was born on April 10, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA to Morris and Eva Lazarow and moved to Atlantic City, NJ at the age of five. He was preceded in death by his much beloved wife of 52 years, Pearl Brown Lazarow and his beloved son, Howard Lazarow. He is survived by his sons, Sheldon and Lee; his sister, Sara Labov of Margate, NJ; grandchildren, Jason Lazarow, Ari Lazarow, Heather (Kurt) Venos, Lacey Lazarow, Briana Grenier; and great-grandson, Samuel Venos. He served five years as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a bombardier and bombardier instructor. He was honorably discharged after the war in Tucson where he remained until his death. He received a bachelor's degree from Temple University in Philadelphia and a law degree from the University of Arizona School of Law. Before attending law school at the U of A he sold real estate. After graduating law school he had a stellar career as a criminal defense attorney. He achieved local and national notoriety for his representation of clients in numerous high-profile cases during his long career. In 1960 he ran for Pima County Attorney. In 1976 he was joined in his legal practice by his son, Sheldon. He retired from the practice of law in 1989 due to illness. Ben was a well-respected member of the legal community not only for his noted abilities in the courtroom, but also for his trustworthiness, honesty and passion for justice and the law. He was a positive influence on numerous attorneys practicing today. He had no hobbies because the law and his family consumed his life's time. Ben was also very charitable and civic-minded. He served on numerous community boards including those of Handmaker Jewish nursing home, where he was president for two years; and Congregation Anshei Israel. Although the practice of law was an important part of his life, Ben's true passion in life was for his family. He cherished his wife and adored his sons and grandchildren. He taught his sons the meaning of kindness, integrity, honesty, value of family and community by his example. He was the best friend a father could be to his sons. He enjoyed numerous good friends and would often regale them with the most interesting stories of his career and life. All his family and friends had their lives truly enriched by Ben. He will be truly missed, but his memory will shine for all who knew him. Service, Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 1:00 P.M., Congregation Anshei Israel, 5550 E. 5th St., with Rabbi Eisen officiating. Interment to follow Congregation Anshei Israel Section of Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to your favorite charity. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. What a remarkable man and a remarkable life. I enjoyed conversations with Ben and am sorry that I did not get to see him more. I last saw him in September and I am thankful for that. He always made me feel welcome. Knowing him, even just the little I did, was a pleasure.

Ben Lazarow was an amazing person. I will forever cherish the memories I have of him speaking his words of wisdom and sitting down to talk about every part of life. His love for life and his family were shown by his constant support and desire to help and encourage. He was the best grandfather I could have asked for and he will never be forgotten.

Uncle Ben and Aunt Pearl were great sources of support for me during the course of my entire life. I miss them tremendously and always enjoyed spending time with them. From Hebrew school consecration to high school graduation to Marine boot camp graduation, they were always there. The memories that they have given me have served a vital role in my becoming who I am today. Thank you for being my Aunt and Uncle and I will always be greatful for all of the time I shared with you.

I was privileged to be Ben's dentist since 1980. He was much more than a patient. He was also a friend and mentor. We would talk about his career and the law and he always advised me to take more time off. Advise I have taken. We in this office will all miss him. Robert F. Hawke, DDS

I was one of the fortunate ones who was privileged to have shared a portion of my life with this highly gifted and heroic lawyer/friend. Ben was a stalwart man of conviction and sage advice for those he represented and those he mentored...and he generously mentored some of the finest lawyers in Tucson. His passing represents the loss of an era.

My condolences to the Lazarow family. Your father, grandfather was a kind man. He helped me in giving me advice for an incident in 1981 and I will be forever grateful. May the good memories you hold overcome the grief.

Dear Lee, Shelly and the entire Lazarow Family,

Uncle Ben was a truly special person. I have wonderful childhood memories of him and the rest of the family in Atlantic City. He is now in heaven with his beloved wife Pearl, his son Howard, his parents, and his brothers Harry and Joseph.

My sincerest sympathies. I hope that the legacy he has left brings you comfort in these days of mourning.
