Carl Rald Obituary

Carl Rald 71, left us on June 22, 2006. Missing him deeply are his wife, Katharine Kent; sons, Poul Rald (Birthe Lardal), Tokkerup, Denmark, and Peter Rald (Hanne), Helsingor, Denmark and Charles Kent, Las Vegas, Nevada; brother, Jorgen Rald (Karen), Skive, Denmark; granddaughter, Lucca Rald, Helsingor, Denmark. Carl was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. In his early career he worked in the Danish film industry as a producer. Before moving to Tucson in 1976, Carl spent six years in Dar-es-Salam, Tanzania designing and building the Tanzanian Film Institute for UNESCO. Carl received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture from the University of Arizona, where he also worked as an Assistant Adjunct Professor. He subsequently retired from the U of A College of Architecture after inspiring many young architects. He then joined the City of Tucson on a DOE contract to educate homeowners and home builders on energy efficiency strategies. As partner of Richard Larry Medlin Architects, Inc and Vice President of The Solar Store, he was able to put strategies to practice. Throughout his career in Tucson, Carl was a strong advocate for energy efficiency and solar design. His passions included watercolor painting, classical music and entertaining his friends and family. Donations can be made to Solar Energy International, PO Box 715, Carbondale, CO 81623, attention Justine or call 970-963-8855. Contact The Solar Store for additional information (322-5180). I met Carl at an Affordable Comfort Conference and he was very interested in promoting energy efficiency in Tucson. He and I spent many hours talking and became fast friends. We corresponded frequently and visited at the Kansas City ACKC conference. I took Carl for a ride in my Prius and he decided that it would be a perfect car for his wife. I understand that she now drives one. I'll miss Carl greatly. He was one of the most wonderful people I have ever met.

I am very sad to hear of Carl's passing. He was a creative genius and a person of great compassion and vision. I was privileged to have been with Satori School when he designed the beautiful rammed earth green structure that serves as their elementary school. That simple building is a perfect expression of the spirit of Satori and a testament to Carl's creativity, ecological principles, and his deep understanding of his client. I have fond memories of long talks with him over good food and wine. Goodbye Carl.

I had the honor of encountering Carl in a professional setting, and came to know him as a kind, intelligent and interesting man. He always had something to teach for those willing to learn, and a kind word for those willing to share with him. I enjoyed our conversations, and will recall him with respect. May his family be comforted by the positive things he did in the community, and the honorable mark he left behind.

I was so surprised to hear of Carl's passing. I enjoyed working with Carl and Larry in their architecture office after graduating UofA in 1998. My condolences to the family.

There is now such a HUGE whole in the universe where Carl used to be. We will miss his humor and the wonderful times we shared playing tennis, skiing, playing bridge, eating good food and drinking fine wine. Life will never be the same again. Our hearts ache for the family and other friends. We will miss him deeply.
