Carlos Touche Obituary

Carlos G. Touche 79, passed away June 20, 2008, so today we honor his memory. Carlos Touche spent his life building successful businesses. His happiest moments were spending time with family and friends, with his wife Sue, and with his many grandchildren. As one of the founding partners of Lovitt & Touche, Inc., he has been an important part of the lives of countless individuals in Tucson and Phoenix. Carlos was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1928, to a very entrepreneurial and colorful family. His family moved to Tucson in December of 1940 when Carlos was 12. He attended the University of Arizona where he received a degree in Finance and Business. Carlos then joined the US Army Armor Division and became a 1st Lieutenant stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. In August of 1953, he took his first job in insurance, which would lead to his partnerships with Marvin Snodgrass, Buddy Amos, Mac Lovitt, John Downey and later, Jim Spring. He founded Employer's Dental Services, the first dental HMO in the state. Carlos spent his life as a civic leader, serving on several boards of non-profit organizations and businesses, and was a member of the Tucson Conquistadores since 1964. He was Chairman of the Tucson Open in 1971 and has continued to be a member of the Tucson Airport Authority. He married Susan Smith in 1971, and Sue became the love of his life. Although he survived a prior heart attack and a devastating plane crash, he never stopped making his life a great adventure, something to be lived and experienced. He traveled extensively to exotic placing pursuing his love of hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Carlos experienced a life most of us could never dream of, and could captivate a room with his tales. He is survived by his wife, Sue and two sons, Charles and Steven, daughter Laura, stepson, John VanWyk, stepdaughter, Trish Rosenfeld, brother, Albert, and 11 grandchildren who he enjoyed so much. Memorial Services will be private. Friends are invited to a reception to celebrate his life on Friday, June 27, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. in Tucson Country Club. We both knew Carlos to be a great guy, very fair and fun to be around. He will be sorely missed. Our sympathy to the Touche family.

Our experiences together in hunting and fishing and business relationships will never be forgotten; especially our many trips together to Baja in his airplane. It was a high honor to have known him and I will treasure his memory forever.

I had just begun to work with Carlos, but it didn't take long to realize what a special person he was. The time that I did spend working with him on the computer was enjoyable as well as an adventure.

I can hardly believe this wonderful vibrant man is gone. I’ve known Carlos Touché for over 12 years – the first meeting when he interviewed me for my position at L&T. One of my favorite memories was flying with him in his plane to Show Low. He would fly me up to business appointments in order to get in some pilot hours. During the trips I had some wonderful one-on-one time with Carlos listening to his stories of Steve and Charlie when they were little. He truly loved his family. This guest book helps us all cherish our memories of Carlos. My sincere sympathy goes out to the entire Touché family.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of this gentle, honorable man. I was blessed to do business with him for many years. When I became Deputy County Manager for Navajo County in 1985, I was given responsibility for all County insurance matters. I knew nothing about insurance and was overwhelmed. Carlos invited me to Tucson and spent 5 full days of his valuable time teaching me everything I could absorb about property, liability and health coverages. He gave me both his friendship and a career. I gave him my business but more importantly, my trust. My deepest sympathies to his family, and especially Steven, who most admirably followed in Carlos' footsteps.

Con immensa tristesa,

Carlos saved my fathers life on one of the many hunting trips they had together, and he also burned down half the mountain on another. Just two of the many great memories our family has of Carlos. We'll miss him. Our sincere condolences to the entire Touche family.

To the Touche' family, my thoughts and prayers go out to each and everyone of you. I only had the pleasure of meeting Carlos once after I first started working here. I could tell by that brief meeting what a wonderful man he was. He always had a smile for everyone.

My sincerest condolences go out to the family. I did not get to know Carlos personally but he built an incredible organization that I have been proud to be a part of for 9 years. I know that he was loved by many. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Carlos and my dad, Larry Powers, had a lifelong friendship that began when they were young boys. Consequently, and fortunately, Carlos was my Godfather. He was present for many of my big milestones. He threw a wonderful engagement party for my husband and me in 1986 and he was in church with us when my oldest son was baptized. To the Touche family: I pray that the wonderful memories you have of Carlos comfort you. My deepest condolences are with you at this sad time. God bless all of you.

My condolences to the family of Carlos Touché on their tremendous loss. I will always remember Carlos as being a tough but fair employer. I remember him sitting me down for a "talking to" and I started tearing up - not because he was yelling, but because I had disappointed the man I had so much respect for. He pointed his finger at me and said "Don't you dare start crying" as he continued to discuss the error in judgement - one in which the needs of the insured were not my first priority. A good week later he called me in his office and wanted me to know that he didn't apologize for yelling, but he was sorry it had made me cry. He only wanted the best for both his customers and his employees and that he hoped his guideance would help make me a better professional.

The professionalism and integrity practiced here on a regular basis is why I have remained at Lovitt & Touché for the past 24 years. I have taken note that while the person at the helm has changed, and perhaps the delivery method, his sons have maintained the same professionalism and integrity.

Carlos, I will miss you.

I was shocked to hear of the death of Carlos Touche. It marks the passing of an of an icon and an era when business was done with honor and a handshake. The relationship between the Touches and the Jacomes goes back to the times when honesty, integrity, respect and hard work were the criteria on which men were judged. My father and Carlos were two, that from humble beginnings, rose to the level that commanded the esteem that they so rightfully earned. And they were friends. It is truly a loss, not only to the family, but to the whole community. On behalf of the entire Jacome family, my self and my mother, I offer our deepest sympathy. We join with you in your mourning of a great Tucsonan and marvelous human being. May he rest in peace.
Affectionately, Alex F. Jacome

As one of the girls I never got to go on the fishing or hunting trips with Uncle Carlos and the Jacks and Dad (Larry) and Ralph and Bud and Dick and all the boys. But I have many Uncle Carlos memories too and I am grateful for him in our lives ... Was I five, Nikki a year younger, Chris a baby and Dede still in the future when "Santa" came to our house to speak with us? Big guy, red suit, funny hat, white beard, Christmas bells and shiney black boots. He knelt down and gently picked us up. He wanted to know our Christmas wishes. The list pale now in comparison to how important the visit made us feel. We were somebody! Santa came to our house to visit BEFORE Christmas. When Santa left the comment from the Powers girls was "Santa Claus smells like Uncle Carlos!" A gentle man, full of adventure and kindness, a world traveler loved by many. That was Carlos. I know this is just one of the many Uncle Carlos stories that will be told again and again. Dear Touche Family and Friends we are sorry for your loss please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
