Dr. David Samuel Alberts obituary, 1939-2023, Tucson, AZ

David Alberts Obituary

Dr. David Samuel Alberts passed away on July 29, 2023, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.  David Samuel Alberts was born December 30, 1939, in Milwaukee, WI. He was the youngest child of the late Ben and Esther Alberts and sibling of Chip (Eugene) Alberts and Bunny (Roberta) Alberts Fried. In 1958 he graduated from Shorewood High where he was the Editor of the School's student newspaper and captain of the swim team. In 1958 he entered Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut as pre-medical student on a full scholarship and graduated in 1962 with Phi Beta Kappa honors. He then received a full scholarship to the University of Virginia Medical School. While at Trinity he met the love of his life, Heather Axelrod Alberts, a student from Connecticut College. Heather and David were married on June 16, 1963. They began to build a beautiful life together and had two children, Timothy, and Sabrina (Plattner).  David Graduated with honors and distinction from UVA medical School in 1966 and went on to pursue a career in Oncology.  Clinically, Dr. Alberts pioneered new treatments for advanced ovarian cancers. Alberts authored or co-authored over 550 peer reviewed publications and 100 book chapters and served as Editor of nine books. Dr. Alberts conducted his internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota and then served on the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco, for five years and obtained Board certification in Medicine and Medical Oncology in 1973. He joined the UArizona College of Medicine in 1975 as a professor, where he has served for over 48 years and served as the UArizona Cancer Center Director from 2005 to 2013. Dr. Alberts was a Regents Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology, Nutritional Science, and Public Health at the UArizona College of Medicine.  Dr, Alberts retired from full time work in 2017, however, that could not keep him away from his passion of curing Women's cancers. He continued to work part time at UACC. While Dr. Alberts will be remembered for his dedication to cancer research and development of new oncology drugs and treatments, his biggest impact will be on the lives he touched and saved as an outstanding physician.  Dave was always there for his patients at any time of the day or night.  His compassion, commitment and overall care for his patients was unmatched.  He will be remembered by his patients and their families forever. David's life dedication was not only to his career but also to his loving family.  He was an especially proud grandfather to Samuel, Sydney and Tate Alberts and Sophie and Emma Plattner. He had a great sense of humor and passion for sports, especially the UArizona basketball and football teams, where he was a season ticket holder for 48 years. David religiously read the Greg Hansen column with his son.  David is survived by his wife and best friend Heather Axelrod Alberts, sister Bunny Fried (The late John Fried), brother Chip Alberts, his children Tim (Angelle) Alberts and Sabrina (Danny) Plattner, honoree daughter Kaja Lewinn, grandchildren Samuel, Sydney and Tate Alberts and Sophie and Emma Plattner, many loved sister/brother-in laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 6th at 10:00 am located at the Westward Look Resort. The family asks that in lieu of flowers you please make donations to support the Dr. David Alberts Endowed Fellowship for Cancer Prevention, payable to the University of Arizona Foundation/University of Arizona Cancer Center and mail to 1515 N. Campbell Ave., P.O. Box 245024 Tucson, AZ, 85724-5018.

Dr. Alberts was a very kind man, very attentive to everyone he spoke to. As someone new to Tucson, with a lofty goal to help end CRC cancer as we know it, I only wish I had met him many years earlier than I did. Kim Adair, Executive Director of Butt Check Inc.

I was saddened to hear of Dave´s recent passing while on the Arizona Cancer Center Skin Cancer Institute website today. My heart goes out to Heather and all of Dr. Alberts´ family as they heal from such a significant loss. I want to express my gratitude to Heather and family for supporting his ability to achieve so much in his lifetime.

Dr. Alberts was my PhD graduate advisor. He believed in me as a 15-year AZCC staff scientist, and my potential as a graduate student. He positively influenced the progress of my career and he truly cared about me. I still have a 25-year-old post-a-note from him encouraging me to keep applying to graduate programs, that he attached to a graduate program rejection letter! I think of Dave often as I carry on advancing cell and gene cancer therapy at the UW-Madison, Carbone Cancer Center. He fostered my ability to think and act "outside the box" and I have made a career doing just that!

I learned of Dave´s death from our son, Josh, who was told by his long-time friend and Dave´s and Heather´s nephew, Matt Koff. Although Dave and I had not kept in touch recently, I have vivid and fond memories of the times we spent together, both professionally and personally, over so many years. He was an astute colleague who had an extraordinary capacity for work, yet he was always there when needed to support his family, friends, and colleagues. One of my most vivid memories of Dave was seeing him edit a scientific manuscript, all the while pedaling his exercise bike and watching a U of A basketball game. He was one of a kind and brought so much of himself to his work and his friendships. Jane joins me in sending our thoughts and wishes to Heather and all the family.

To Heather, Sabrina, and all your Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He was so brilliant and so compassionate. He always took the time to thank people for their work and really knew all the people in the cancer center. I will never forget how kind and supportive he was when my husband passed away. Not only did he call me at home and send a food basket, he came to the service and told me to take care of myself and my family and that my job will be waiting for me whenever I was ready. When I did return, he made a point of greeting me in the hall with kind words. My heart goes out to you and I hope you will find comfort in each other and in your many memories.

I've known Dave since my first day at the UA Cancer Center in 2002. He stopped by the office I was working in and gave a friendly "Hello". Soon after, I was informed he was the director of the Cancer Center. At the time, I thought it was so kind of him to stop and say hi. I only later got to know him as the incredible doctor, scientist, and all-around person that he was. Working with Dave was always exciting because he had such new and interesting ideas to share. His enthusiasm for knowledge and helping people never waned. Dave will be so missed by all who are lucky enough to have known him.

Dear Heather and Wonderful Family, Dave symbolized many things to each of us. Over time, I came to appreciate that Dave Alberts had become Arizona, sharing his grace and wisdom with all cultures, the land, and even with politicians. His office was an extension of his home, or vice-versa. Every time that we met, including our last visit, was an opportunity to see the world in a different light, and for that, I am eternally grateful. Wishing you peace and strength in the months ahead,
Michael Bookman

There are no words to fully describe the incredible impact he had on my career as well as on the Cancer Center as a whole.
