Edward Davenport Obituary

DAVENPORT, JR., Edward, Ed, born in St. Louis Missouri, died at home Saturday, March 15, 2008, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his wife of 13 years, Dina (Rosengarten) and his three beautiful children, Michaela, Trey and Rachel, the loves of his life. He is survived by his parents, Peggy and LeRoy Davenport, his sister Angela Bedwell (Derek), his nieces and nephews Hannah, Ethan, Isacc and Lauren, all of Missouri, in addition to many loving relatives and friends. Ed earned a BS and a Masters of Psychological Counseling from Southeast Missouri State University. In 1990, Ed moved to Tucson and pursued his career in the mental health field at ACCM and La Frontera. In 1995, Ed combined his love for the outdoors and passion to help children by creating a non profit organization called Outdoor Confidence, providing outdoor education to children and their families. He loved to teach children how to use a map and compass, to fish, and to camp. As the Arizona Game and Fish Sport Fishing instructor in Tucson for six years, Ed had the joy of teaching children about fishing, the importance of conservation and the beauty of nature and the great outdoors. Ed was instrumental in establishing the Miracle Manor Neighborhood Association, and obtaining Back to Basic funds. His leadership and commitment to the community continues to enhance the lives of many. Ed was diagnosed with Frontal Lobe Dementia several years ago, and despite the challenges caused by this awful disease, he continued to be a devoted father who loved to cuddle with his children and watch Saturday morning cartoons in bed with them. He had an infectious laugh that continues on in his children, beautiful blue eyes that always had a twinkle, and at a time when he had no words, reflected the love he had for his family. Ed taught us all many life lessons, and was a gift to all who knew him. We are all blessed for having him in our life and for sharing his love with us. He will be greatly missed by his family. Funeral services Wednesday, March 19, 2008 11:00 a.m. at EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Send a Kid to Camp, PO Box 16141, Tucson, Arizona 85732-6141, or The Old Pueblo Chapter of Trout Unlimited #531 at 7698 Sombrero Peak Drive Tucson, Arizona 85743.

Dear Dina, Michaela, Rachel & Trey,
We were so saddened to hear of Ed's passing. If it weren't for Ed's dedication, motivation and passion to increase the well-being of Miracle Manor Neighborhood, we would still have dirt roads! I will always remember our picnics Dina in Jacinto Park with Michaela & Travis. Baking cookies with Travis in your home, Halloween adventures & just talking. Our prayers & thoughts are with you and your children daily. Ed inspired all of his neighbors to get the "ball" rolling for neighborhood improvements. Thanks to Ed, the "ball" keeps on rolling here! Love, Travis, Mani & Jeff Vertrees

Ed left behind a legacy of goodwill. Michaela, Rachel, & Trey- there are great and powerful memories to hold onto, ones which are supplemented in newspaper print with photos and color, a testament to the generous, committed, and loving dad you had. Keep the positive close to your heart and your dad will be there with you always ready to remind you that determination, hard work and shared love is at the root of happiness and a life well lived. Our fond memories of Ed include his way at fishing programs, camping overnight, playing cards, anime, his laugh, his desire to put together a kids camp, tossing his kids in the air and helping them play on the swingset at the old house and yes his easygoing nature and hard work. He was loved by many and will sorely be missed.

I graduated from high school with the "The Big E"...we hung out a bit, cruised the streets, and I remember him as a kind young man with a laugh always on his lips, just waiting for a reason to let it go...my thoughts are with all his friends and family...

I am sad to hear the passing of my friend Ed Davenport. We went to college together and were members of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Ed was always there to lend a helping hand of support to anyone that needed help. He leaves behind a great legacy of being a great father, husband, and mentor to many children.

We had many great times at ISC High School and even more at SEMO.
I am not suprised to learn of the great things you did for kids in Arizona. I am sure you were a great dad. Everyone back in Missouri and all the Pikes will miss you.

Yes, he did have an infectious laugh! I remember when he first moved to Tucson & started working at ACCM with us - the first monsoon season, when all of us "natives" were worried about navigating the streets - he would joke with us & say "It's just a little rain!" This is a loss for everybody that knew him to be sure but especially for his family. You & the kids are in my prayers, Dina. Sorry, I wouldn't be able to attend the services.

It was an honor and a privelege to work with Ed in the Sportfishing Education program through Outdoor Confidence. He loved being with the kids and was always eager to share his love for the outdoors with them. I looked forward to those weekends when he held the open-to-the-public fishing events and I could volunteer time with the program. There is no broader smile that that of a child who has just caught a fish for the first time. Ed was blessed; he saw that smile many times.
My deepest sympathies to you an your family for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

What beautiful words for the obituary, and how true about his eyes. He and Dina had an electricity between them even in the last few weeks. What a great family you are, and how strong you are, Dina, for handling the last few years with such grace and positive energy. We're here to help in any way we can.

Mr. Davenport's love for children was evident when he helped out in Michaela's 2nd grade classroom. He was joyful taking on the responsibility of helping a group work with pumpkin math. Digging, measuring, seed counting and cleaning up pulp, were some of the required tasks. Those tasks can be very daunting with second graders behind a pumpkin. I was greatful for his happy attitude, even after the task was complete, he graciously said that he was happy to help. I could see that twinkle in his eye! Thank you to all the Davenport's for all your help and support in the classroom.
My love, thoughts and prayers are with you today, as you face new challenges in life. May you draw even closer together to find love, support and comfort in your family and friends.
