Edward Linden Obituary

Edward Alan Linden Beloved husband to Gloria and adored father to Stephanie and Jonathan, passed away Friday, November 18, following his courageous battle against cancer. He was sixty-two years old. Ed, who was born in Norfolk, Virginia, had lived in Tucson with his family for over thirty years. Ed attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1964 with distinct honors. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia College of Law in 1967. Ed and Gloria married in New York City, where Ed was working for the international law firm of Kelly Drye and Warren. In Tucson, Ed served as managing partner in private practice with the firm of Linden, Chapa and Fields. There, his primary emphases were the negotiation and resolution of all kinds of business conflicts, including franchisor-franchisee disputes; the organization and dissolution of business entities; the negotiation and preparation of commercial agreements; and strategizing and directing major civil litigation. Ed also served as a partner in the firm of Whitehill, Linden, Grynkewich and Halladay, where he continued with his legal specialties. In his most recent, independent practice, Ed became interested in alternative dispute resolution, namely mediation as a means to avoid costly litigation fees between two parties. Ed served as a member on the Panels of Distinguished Neutrals of the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution and as a member of the National Franchise Mediation Program. He had recently been courted by major corporations to handle their mediation proceedings. Ed was a member of the National Roster of Neutrals of the American Arbitration Association and had been certified as an approved NASD Dispute Resolution Mediator. In addition to Ed's impressive career as a private attorney, he served for the past few years as a Pima County Superior Court Judge Pro Tem, conducting settlement conferences on business and contract matters. Ed was a member of the bar in the states of Virginia, New York, Connecticut and Arizona. He had been selected as an "Outstanding Citizen of Tucson" and had been listed for the past 18 years in The Best Lawyers in America. In the July 2005 issue of Tucson Lifestyle magazine, Ed was noted as one of the best lawyers in Tucson. He was honored with admittance to practice law in the United States Federal Court, the District of Arizona, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. Even at the end of his illness, Ed's fighting spirit reflected his extremely determined nature. Ed's bravery, strength and dignity will forever serve as an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by wife Gloria, children Stephanie and Jonathan, sister Susan Green (Arthur) and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the TMC Hospice team for all of their help and kindness. Services will be held Tuesday, November 22 at 10 a.m. at Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edward A. Linden fund for head and neck cancer research through the American Cancer Society: 1-800-227-2345 or locally 321-7989.
