Gordon Gilbert Obituary

Gordon R. Gilbert October 8, 1939 - March 16, 2007 Beloved father, friend, and teacher Gordon Ranney Gilbert passed away Friday, March 16, at his home in Grand Junction, CO. Gordon was born October 8, 1939, and grew up in Phoenix, AZ. He received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1964-1967, Gordon was a research staff member at the M.I.T. Center for Space Research, working in solar physics and experimental satellite design. He was awarded a NASA Traineeship from 1967-1969, and later consulted for NASA, in its Apollo program and the first lunar landing. He received a Ph.D. degree in Physics from M.I.T. in 1972. In 1971 Gordon joined the faculty of the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona where he later served as research Professor of Astronomy and Astronomer. Gordon was co-developer of the SIT Photon-Counting Spectrograph and led the development of the digital Television Detector of Low-Light-Level Astronomy. In 1980, Gordon moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, to pursue his love of theoretical physics and teaching at Mesa State College. He was instrumental in developing the physics program, and served as Chair of the Department of Physics and Chemistry from 1985 to 1993. He received the first Distinguished Faculty Award in 1993. Gordon was a long-time supporter of the arts at Mesa State, and a frequent and popular public speaker. He was a member of the board of the Grand Junction Musical Arts Association, and was a member of the First Congregational Church. He also served for 20 years as a board member of the Intermountain Centers for Human Development in Tucson, AZ. Gordon had an enormous love of nature, a passionate love of music, and a compelling love of physics and mathematics. He possessed an immense sense of poetry, both in books and in the universe, and passed on this beauty to all he met. Gordon wished to leave behind a message of the power of love over all other forces. He will especially be remembered for his love for his family, his friends, and his students. Gordon is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Graves Gilbert of Tucson, AZ; and Elizabeth Johanna Gilbert of Fort Collins, CO; his sons, Gordon Clifton Gilbert of Tucson, AZ; James Christian Gilbert and Thomas Wyatt Gilbert of Fort Collins, CO; and his granddaughters, Yasmine Gilbert and Alia Gilbert of Tucson, AZ. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 1425 N. 5th St. Grand Junction, CO. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gordon R. Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund, with checks payable to the Mesa State College Foundation; to the Intermountain Centers for Human Development; or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado.

Dr. Gilbert could always see the light in the dark. I will miss him, as will everyone else. He was a great mentor and friend. He was that little friendly reminder that life has so much to offer. I met Gordon at Tope Elementary where he gave so much of himself. He shared stories of his past and his thoughts of the present. Later, I became a student of Dr. Gilbert's at Mesa State College. I enjoyed him as a person and as a teacher. He will live on in all our memories for the kind and caring person he always was.

An easy way to judge someone is to look at their family. Some of the best human beings I know are "Little" Gordon and his family, Jennifer, and Sue Gilbert. Anyone would be proud of such a legacy.

I was lucky to be your neighbor Gordon. Thanks for touching the lives of all the Ortiz children in such a positive and loving way. I will always be proud to call the Gilberts my friends.

Dr. Gilbert touched many lives during his tenure at Mesa State. He's known among the physics folk as a true intellectual, but he also was famous for making astronomy and physics understandable and interesting for everyone.

The stories of how he dressed up as Isaac Newton to teach and then pretended that some crazy guy had taken over the class will live on... I'm glad to have known Dr. Gilbert and experienced his enthusiasm for learning. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Gilbert was a wonderful person and an excellent teacher. Not just in acedemia, but in all aspects of life. No matter what, he always had a smile on his face, a song in his heart and a spring in his step. I will never forget all that he taught me.

Dr. Gilbert was a kind and gentle person. He was so warm to all those around him. He carried so much wonderful knowledge- that he couldn't help but to spill a little onto his students. I loved his teaching styles and the way he touched the hearts of every single student he encountered. I was lucky enough to work for Dr. Gilbert here at Mesa State College for the last four years. He showed me that it is ok to care about others and he also showed me that not all people are bad at heart. He taught me to be strong through the worst of times and to keep my head up at all times. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him- I know I do. I wish the best to all of his family and I am sorry for your loss.

Mr. Gilbert, who should have been Dr. Gilbert, but never said anything about it to me, was my best friend's Dad, while I was growing up, and I remember singing songs, toasting marshmallows, and going camping with him, his daughter, Jennifer, his son, Gordon, and my brother. I remember him as a kind, loving, gentle man, and I am grieved and shocked to learn of his passing. My deepest condolences to his family, and I grieve for the untimely passage of a wonderful man.
