JOAN ARMSTRONG Obituary

Legendary coach Joan Armstrong who fostered excellence and character in thousands of young athletes at Skagit Valley College and other area schools died Aug. 5, 2008. She was 71.

Joan, or "Coach," as her athletes and students fondly called her was born in Seattle on June 21, 1937 and raised in LaConner by her parents, Douglas Armstrong and Georgia "Cressey" Armstrong, and her beloved Grandma Armstrong. Joan loved the farm, and it was there bucking hay and driving machinery under the gaze of the Cascades, that she developed a life-long commitment to hard work and perseverance.

An outstanding student-athlete, Joan played varsity field hockey, basketball and tennis at the University of Washington where she graduated in 1960 with a Masters Degree in education.

Joan - who was inducted into top-flight competition as one of Olympic gymnastics star, Cathy Rigby's coaches - in 1961 brought more sophisticated and rigorous training programs to Skagit's men and women athletes. She asked for the same kind of dedication in her challenging anatomy and physiology classes.

Her inspiration, grounded in an unshakeable faith that her athletes, students, colleagues and friends, were capable of great things, resulted in dozens of championships and individuals who fulfilled their potential at the college, or even national level.

At Skagit Valley her leadership genius was recognized when the new tennis complex recently was named in her honor.
Joan received her doctorate degree from Brigham Young University in 1974, and later coached field hockey at Western Washington University. She was an assistant coach of the boys and girls tennis teams at Sehome High School last year even as she struggled with the final stages of cancer, but her enthusiasm never waivered for a moment and she never missed a match.

Joan felt like all her athletes and students were her "kids," and she took pride in every one of them. But, she reserved the holidays and many other times for her two special families: the Silverthorns originally from Sedro-Woolley and the Sathers of Oak Harbor. With them, she was family and her generosity and fondness for them was boundless. The Silverthorns particularly remember the annual holiday shopping trip.

She loved to travel, especially with the kids to Disneyland, enjoyed her beach home and boat, and delighted in dinners and spontaneous visits with a remarkably large circle of friends.

Joan had the kind of spirit that found God everywhere. She saw the best in everyone with a sincerity and joy that gave her that wonderful smile, and all that wisdom behind those eyes.

She was loved deeply and will be missed. Joan is survived by members of the Sather family:
Marcus Sather of Oak Harbor, Marie Sather of Bellingham and her children Anna and Taylor, Jerry Sather of Oak Harbor, Mike Sather of LaConner, Judy (Sather) Vanausdale-Haven and Skip of Rapid City, South Dakota, Jack Sather of Mt. Vernon and Melanie (Sather) Sutton. Tanya Skeers and her husband Ben of Mt. Vernon and children Jaden, Rachel, Jessica and Tavi. Jeromy Waddell and wife Julie of Bayview and children Jordan, Johnna and Jayna. Zane Sather, Susan Sather, Hailey Sather and her daughter Susan in Mt. Vernon. Marshall Sutton and Jessica of Puyallup and daughter Hannah. Holly Sather of Sedro Woolley and her children Trey, Ashton and Lyric.

And by the Silverthorn family:
Jane Bridge of Anacortes; Kathryn Silverthorn of Edmonds; Maggie Thompson and husband, Tom, of Anacortes, Mary Kiser and husband Mark, and their children Katie, Whitney, and Jon all of Anacortes; Liz Silverthorn
of Torrance, CA; Patty Johnson and her husband Van and son Myles, of Anacortes; Christine Cote and husband Dave, and their children Aly & Mike of Selah, WA; Shaun Bridge and wife Tami, and their children Alex and Lilly of Sedro-Woolley; Leanna Rezvani and husband David; and their children Sofia and Alistair of Lexington, MA; Patrick Swapp and wife Kelsey, and their children Ty and Tatum of Anacortes; and Emilie McFarlane and husband Brett, and their son Charlie of Seattle.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Skagit Valley College Foundation/Joan Armstrong Tennis Courts/Athletics or University of Washington Foundation/Pre-Title IX Women Athletes Endowment

A vigil, and mass in Joan's name will be held on Friday, Aug. 8th at 9pm (vigil) and Saturday, Aug 9th (mass) at 10 a.m. Both ceremonies will take place at Sacred Heart Church in Bellingham.

I worked with Joan at Skagit Valley. They hired me to be head tennis coach for both the men´s and women´s teams while Joan worked as assistant coach. Of course she could have been head coach but wanted to spend more time with her family. It was a joy to work with her. She was smart, funny, kind, and tough. I think of her often.

Dear Fellow Joan Friends and Family,

I join you in deep sorrow in your loss of one special soul. I hope that after the tears stop flowing so frequently that we are able to live our lives a little more like Joan would want us to, with more joy and a whole lot of love to be shared freely. What a woman. Such a gift to all of us and proof that good things indeed do come in small packages. Hang in there everyone. Love to all, Heather

I met Joannie in 1961. She became a friend of myself and my family. I knew Doug and Georgia Armstrong who also knew my grandmother, Georgia Johnson, who grew up in the LaConner area.

Joannie taught me to play field hockey and tennis. She expected hard work and excellence from her students, but was kind and compassionate when determined effort was made. She encouraged me when I needed it and believed in me when I doubted myself.

She loved seeing her students succeed, grow and flourish. She never took credit for their nurturing. She modeled the fruits of the spirit; her actions spoke volumes about her.

She was educated to teach and coach and performed these skills naturally with ease. She was humble in the presence of others which drew them to her. She was a brilliant thinker. She and I would talk for hours about our philosophies.

She taught me life lessons that will remain with me always. She loved without expectations. She was generous with her possessions and her spirit. She let me drive her little green "Sunbeam" occasionally.

Joannie is gone, but not forgotten.

May Joannie rest without pain and suffering in the arms of Jesus with her eternal family.

Coach - there was nobody like you and nobody will ever fill the spot in my heart that is empty now that your are gone. Your faith, wisdom, positive attitude and loving heart have left an impact on me and my family that will be everlasting. Thank you for being so special every day of the last 27 years I got to spend with you. We will miss you more than you can know.

I was also one of Joan's SVC athletes. She became a very important person in my life very shortly after I met her.

She has also been a very important person in the lives of my husband, Glen, as well as our daughter, Gabrielle Joan. Yes, Gabrielle was named after Joan. Joan often laughed about her name only being used when Gabrielle was in trouble, as in "Gabrielle Joan, stop misbehaving."

One of Gabrielle's favorite activities as a child was to stand next to her "Mama Joan" to see who was taller. It didn't take 6' tall Gabrielle long to pass Joan!

When I was going to drop out of college to marry Glen, who Joan thought was wonderful, Joan told me I should wait until after I finished college. At that time I promised Joan that I would finish college later. Because of that promise, I did finish college.

Because we have lived in North Caroline and now live in Southern Oregon, we haven't been able to spend as much time with Joan as we would have liked. We were, however, blessed by being able to visit with her in May.

Marie, our thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls during this hard time. I wish we could be there with you.

Joan, we know you are reading this and we want you to know how much you have been and still are loved.

Joan Armstrong
Was one of the nicest people I ever
met at SVC...she was my instructor for a first aid class., she said she would trust me to save her any time..what a compliment...I think she said that to all her students..
She will be missed by all who knew her.

Coach had such an impact on my life and was such an excellent role model. I would love to have an ounce of the faith and compassion she had for everyone. She was truly and inspiration to everyone she met. Coach will always be in our hearts. Although, she is not physically present her spirit will remain with us always.

Joan was a generous, loving person who gave to her family and friends with an unselfish heart. I will miss her cheer and enthusiasm, her love of sports and life. Joan personified the words support and forgiveness.

Our family will miss Joan Armstrong. She was a fixture on the sidelines of so many soccer games -- 13 years' worth -- and she was there not only to support and cheer for Anna, but all the Southside Soccer girls. To the Helberg-Sather family, our hearts go out to you.

I am one of many who would not have been the person I am today had it not been for the gift of "Coach" / Joan in my life. I'm confident she's already up there getting some of our old teammates together for a joy filled game of field hockey. My thoughts are with all of Joan's chosen family.
