Joan DIAMOND Obituary

DIAMOND, Joan B. Sorrowfully, we announce the peaceful passing on December 28, 2016 of Joan B. Diamond, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Born on February 11, 1929 in Des Moines, IA, Joan carried herself as our family's queen throughout her life. The youngest of three, Joan spent her childhood in Des Moines and summered in Sag Harbor, NY. After attending Ferry Hall boarding school in Illinois, she followed her sister Helen west to attend the University of Arizona where she met her husband to be, Donald. Joan's love of music led her to major in voice and piano. Lacking commitment from Donald, Joan transferred to the University of Syracuse where she immediately was chosen as the Homecoming Queen. Fortunately for Joan, her future father-in-law knocked some sense into his son Donald and told him he better marry her before she gets away. Their 64 years of marriage included living in NYC, Great Neck, NY, and returning to Tucson 51 years ago. Guided by the principle of family first, Joan lived for spending time with Donald, daughters Jennifer and Helaine and grandchildren, Nathan, Carly and Gabby and her nieces, nephews and their families. Her empathetic nature compelled her and Donald to turn the tragedy of losing daughter Deanne to asthma complications into opportunity and hope for others. Joan was instrumental in establishing Steele Children's Research Center and joined her husband to provide the lead donation to establish Diamond Children's Hospital. Joan also volunteered her time to the Jewish community, Brewster Center, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Angel Charities for Children and as a Brownie Girl Scout leader. Joan will be remembered for her kindness, beauty, elegance, wit and unconditional love for her family. Private Services were held on December 30, 2016 and a Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. Donations in Joan's memory may be made to the nonprofit of your choice. Matriarch is not a title I use loosely. It requires a women who holds her family together through her thoughts, words and deeds. I have no doubt the family will be sure her life continues to be a blessing.
