John Reynolds Obituary

John Lawrence Reynolds died at his beloved home in Tucson, Arizona on December 7th, 2022. John was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on August 9, 1952, and was raised in Wabash, IN. He lived a life filled with adventure, love, science and learning. He entered Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington to study astronomy and physics in 1970. Finances forced a 2-year purgatorial hiatus in East Chicago steel mills, but he worked his way back to IU, earning a Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics in 1976, and a Master of Arts in Geophysics in 1978. He then joined Mobil Oil Corporation as an exploration geophysicist, and traveled worldwide helping the company locate new oil and gas deposits. Work took him to many countries, primarily throughout Africa. John also gained a life long partner...after 5 months at Mobil, John met his wife A-Lan on her first day of work as a geophysicist. He often recounted that as he shook her hand he felt an electric shock go through his whole body, and they both knew they were destined to be together for life, sharing an epic love for each other. Retiring from Mobil in 1999, John joined Pioneer Natural Resources until 2003, when he moved to Tucson with A-Lan and began an adjunct professorship with Pima Community College, teaching geology and weather/climate classes through 2019. John was a truly gifted teacher, inspired by the wonders of geology, the universe, and weather systems and uniquely able to make complex subjects easily understood. He was so proud to have taught several thousand students at Pima. He was a true renaissance man, with an infinite appetite for learning about many subjects including history, paleontology, paleobotany, anthropology and culture. He also loved his IU Hoosiers!! John donated generously to many charitable organizations throughout his life, with a goal of making other human (and animal!) lives better in his lifetime and for future generations. But he is most missed and loved by his friends and family for his humble, down-to-earth personality, his sense of humor, and his deep, sincere friendship. He is survived by his wife A-Lan, his daughter Janel, sisters Judy Bitz and Elizabeth Martin, and his brother Anthony Holman. In lieu of flowers, John would want donations made to Hope Animal Shelter in Tucson.

A-lan, I was sitting here reminiscing about my time at Raytheon and your name came up. I know we didn't end on great terms, but I always respected you. You were a very bright young woman and I was so sorry to hear about the death of your husband. I'm sure he had to be one very special gentleman. Anyway, sorry we lost touch, and wish you the absolute best all considered. God's blessings!

I met John during Mobil Oil's Geophysical Training Program held in Dallas, Texas in 1979. It was an honor that John asked me to be in his wedding so soon after we met and became good friends. The wedding ceremony was held in a beautiful, tranquil meadow just north of San Francisco where A-Lan's parents lived. This was a marriage for life that was made in Heaven. John was the most calm, mellow person that I have ever known. The last time Kathy and I were with John and A-Lan was during the Tucson Gem and Mineral show in February, 2019. We have remained long distant friends for almost 45 years. It was an honor to know John and be his friend. May God bless John in Heaven.

So many great memories and remembrances of our dear friend John. I first met John and A-lan when I interned at Mobil OKC in 1988 - John was a mentor and such a great person to talk with. While we alway teased each other with him being from Indiana University and I from Purdue, we both liked to laugh and found humor even in the most mundane things. Lots and lots of stories! John and I remained connected once we both departed OKC and he would drop me a note about his overseas travels or his travels to see an eclipse from a remote part of the world. We had such a great visit with John and A-lan in 2015 in Tuscon - all the great stories and memories came rushing back and Linda and I were amazed by the magnitude of the projects this great couple was undertaking - particularly building a New Mexico cabin on their property. The photos I selected were fun times and full of laughter. The photo with the ladder is Bill Zempolich, A-lan and John who with the help of the other Mobil OKC Exploration team put up the logos of their favorite colleges except Purdue on Pat Sheetz office window (sorry Pat!) The field photos were an AAPG trip in 1989 in the Franklin Mountains with John, myself, Frank Musgrove, and Tom Scott. We called an audible and went out as a foursome to visit Carlsbad, White Sands - yes John with a golf club, and Cloudcroft. The last photo was the exploration team 'decorating' an intern (Matt Hoehn's) apartment. I still laugh about this today when I think of John and A-lan and the gang who participated. John will be missed and it brings comfort when I look at the stars and know he is up there and continuing his love of science and astronomy. So many other stories and I look forward to when we can gather and celebrate his life.

We became friends with John and A-Lan through our time at Mobil in Denver. John was always great fun to be around. Whether it was camping out with friends the night before an infamous raft trip, or just playing hooky from the SEG conference to go to Disneyland for the day. John knew how to have fun, and he'll always be remembered fondly for that. We're fortunate enough to have been friends! He will be greatly missed, but his memory will always bring a smile to our faces.

Alan:
A mere statement of my sorrow, for your painful loss
Would be a poor solution for such a total loss.
I was not privileged to know your man, of this I am sad too.
For I too now know such a loss, without a total loss of Sue.
I know the pain and anguish felt, in every day by you.
But God holds John's hand and keeps him safe for you.
So they will be there waiting, in heaven, just for you.

After learning of John´s passing, I started to reminisce on some fond memories I have of us hanging out. John impacted my life in many ways. I looked up to him in graduate school, he was a year ahead of me and had already been through the toughest courses. It turned out misery loved company. We went to field camp together, what a blast. John convinced me to join Mobil. In Dallas, we drank beers on the way home from work in his T-Top Camero because you could in Texas at that time, it was legal!! The bachelor party I had for John is seared into every participants brains forever. He got me interested in astronomy. His telescope was the first time I´d ever looked into the stars. Those really were fun times and they will remain forever. Peace out Hoosier.
