John Waddle Obituary

WADDLE, John Vernon, DDS

1935 - 2020

John Vernon Waddle passed December 30, 2020 into the welcoming embrace of his Savior. Surrounded by his loving family at the foot of the Catalina Mountains, he peacefully began a new journey leaving behind a gentle request that we not mourn, but rather rejoice in "a celebration of life." Indeed, John lived life to its fullest depth and breadth.

Born August 14, 1935 in Los Angeles, California, his family moved to Tucson, Arizona before his fifth birthday. He always considered himself a native son of the Old Pueblo. His formative years were spent in a home at the front gate of the University of Arizona. He was educated in a six-block radius from Roskruge Grade School, Mansfeld Middle School, Tucson High School and ultimately the University of Arizona. He would forever remain a dyed in the wool Wildcat.

John worked as a skilled and well-respected dentist for more than five decades. He attended Northwestern Dental School in Chicago and met the love of his life Jean Harding a radiology technician at Michael Reese Hospital. They were soon married. After graduating from dental school, he served in the US Naval Dental Corps at Camp Pendleton, California. He returned to Tucson where he spent 35 years in private practice. When he retired from private practice, he barely lasted two years before returning to the profession he loved. He worked well into his seventies at El Rio teaching dental students and caring for the underserved.

Ever the consummate professional, John was integrally involved with local and state dental organizations. He was president of the Southern Arizona Dental Association, board member of the Arizona Dental Association and tripartite member of the American Dental Association.

John's commitment to his community was manifest in his dedication to multiple community organizations. He held great pride in his role as president of the Tucson Boys and Girls Club. He also held positions as president of the Phi Gamma Delta graduate chapter, board member of the Badger Foundation, member of the Tucson Centurions and board member of the Tucson Festival Society, amongst many others. He volunteered his skills at Head Start in Nogales and had a special passion for his work at Saint Elizabeth's Clinic where he worked for 33 years.

John will forever be our steely-eyed storyteller, historian and raconteur. From his rope hammock in his backyard overlooking Tucson, he would gather up and regale his beloved grandchildren with stories, anecdotes and tales of his adventurous life. From meeting the Queen at Ascot in top hat and tails to watching the Moki atop the pueblos at Walpi, he could transfix any audience. Many of his stories ebbed near water where he was "one with the world." He loved the gentle lapping waves in San Carlos and the babbling streams in Greer. His passion for SCUBA diving took him hither and yon from the Blue Hole in Belize to the wreck of the Rhone in the British Virgin Islands. He loved the bumps from Aspen to Telluride and even skied in the Dolomites in Italy. All the roads in his life would eventually wind back to his home and his cherished sanctuary of a garden he shared for 62 years with his soulmate Jean. As he would often quote, "When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the Garden." John and Jean were inseparable and incomparable partners with a voracious zest for life.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Margaret as well as his brother, Gilbert. He is survived by his wife, Jean and children, Lori (Marshall Williamson), Denise (Chris McCarty) and Brian (Linda Waddle). His pride of grandchildren include Heidi and Holli Williamson, Stephen, Madelyn, Patrick and Joey McCarty, Scotty and Emily Waddle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Boys and Girls Club of Tucson. Service to be held at sunset August 14, 2021 on the estuary beach south of Pilar Resort San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

I am just learning of Dr. Waddle's death and so many kind, and positive thoughts are filling my mind. He was our family dentist which was not an easy job. Several of us had terrible issues with our teeth. Unlike some dentists, Dr. Waddle would offer advice, but he was never impatient or judgmental (and my teeth were difficult enough that he easily could've been both). He was the nicest man and a wonderful dentist. I think he was the one who inspired my mom to go to Smoke Enders, which I'm sure added many good years to her life. I was so sorry when he retired, but it makes me happy to hear that he kept on making a difference at El Rio.
What a kind and honorable person he always was.
My deepest sympathy to all the family.

Dear Jean,
I am sad to hear of John´s passing. I absolutely loved my very favorite dentist. During
the years that I was his patient was the only time in my life that I didn´t mind going to the
dentist......so kind and gentle and most of all so easy on the eyes ! I always marveled
at the wonderful marriage the two of you shared. The two of you were truly blessed
to have found each other. May you and your wonderful family soon get over the pain of
losing him and relish all the sweet memories he has given you.
Love, Lynne

Sharing in your sadness as we all remember Dr. Waddle. What an amazing person and dentist, and what a remarkable life he lived. I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to work with him at El Rio. We shared many laughs and good times. I will always remember our rival between Northwestern and Iowa. I will greatly miss him.

The good doctor was more than an excellent dentist. He made us feel a part of his extended family with the way he took an interest in our lives. He loved his family and played his daughters' music to us with pride. He will be missed by many.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Dr. Waddle was always so kind. We were friends of the family. When I was in school I used to tell my friends that I had the cutest dentist. I have very fond memories of him. May he rest in peace. May God bless his soul and the family during this time.

While a dentist at the El Rio Health Center, John and I shared an office and many lunches. His kindness and generosity set an excellent example for this group of outstanding professionals. He enriched my life and everyone around him. Indeed his was a life well lived.

Going to the dentist was never a dreaded event when Dr. Waddle was your dentist and family friend. Many fond memories - he pierced my ears at 12 (I was SO excited!), he teased me about how did I have a tooth left in my mouth? after not seeing him through my time in college and the twinkle in his eye when he was talking to you. He was a wonderfully special human.
My sympathy to the Waddle family, may your grief be tempered by the memories of all you shared together.

Dear Jean and Family,
What a wonderful man your John was. This obituary captures what a special guy he was. Such a sparkle in his eyes and great smile. He wasn´t just our dentist but you and he also good friends. I, too moved to Tucson when I was five years old and consider myself a native. Two years older than John, I also graduated from THS and the UA and staunch supporter of our Wildcats. May your memories of all the years spent with John comfort you and may our Lord Jesus Christ surround you with His love.
In Christ´s Love,
