Marian Hannon Obituary

Marian I. Hannon, Tireless Volunteer and Tenacious Competitor, Dies.

Born in St. Paul, Minn., in January 1936, the youngest of four girls. She met Robert (Bob) Hannon at 13; they married in 1957, moved to Tucson in 1960 where she helped run the family business.

Service defined her life. She volunteered with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, taught Character Counts!, and led Family & Community Education as Arizona president and on the national board, earning the "Heart of FCE" award. At Catalina United Methodist Church, she and Mr. Hannon oversaw the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She belonged to Eastern Star and traveled with Mr. Hannon for his national roles in Scottish Rite and DeMolay; many knew her as "Mom Hannon."

A standout butterfly swimmer in her earlier years, she later won USTA age group tennis titles into her 70s and bowled on a team "Two Men and a Gal" into her 80s. For over 30 years she attended U of A football and basketball games and loved watching every sport on television. She gardened for hummingbirds, sewed clothes and quilts (including diapers for young mothers), crocheted, and loved playing cards and puzzles.

She supported AHA's Circle of Red, Youth On Their Own, and UA's Wings on Words Child Language Clinic. Preceded in death by parents; sisters Betty Marchio, Peggy Murphy and Celia Lofquist; and son Kenny, she is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Kerry Stratford; son in law, Herb; grandson, Matthew; sister in law, Barbara DiCataldo; and nieces and nephews around the country.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association – Southern Arizona, Wings on Words, or Youth On Their Own. Services: Oct. 11, 1 p.m., Catalina United Methodist Church, 2700 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson.

Dear Bob and Kerry and family,
I feel so blessed to have known Marian. Our years as neighbors were full of fun outings and enjoying Arizona. Cook outs and watching our kids enjoying their relationship together.
Love and prayers, Emily

Although I did not get to see Mom Hannon often, she was always a joy to see and speak to when out paths crossed over the years. DeMolay connections have a way of making friends family. My condolences to Dad Hannon and the Hannon family.
