Mary....I was just at the cemetery and accidentally came across Nick's grave. I was looking for my father's grave that is located in the same area. I had just come from seeing Maria Garcia who lost her son, Buddy 2 years ago. My son, Daniel is now 32 and continues his struggles with Spina bifida. My husband, Ed died in 2013. Daniel and I spend half the year here in Tucson and half in Idaho. We think of you often. So very sorry to hear about Nick. I live in the same house here in Tucson and I am on facebook if you want to get in touch.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Short: I just heard this sad news today. Thank you for reaching out to the St. Gregory community. I will always remember Nick's infectious smile and enthusiastic view of the world. St. Gregory was lucky to have Nick as a student. My best wishes and condolences to you and your family.

I feel blessed to have known Nicholas. He was an inspiration to me. Amazingly knowledgable and insightful, and extraordinarily persevering. He is an example to us all. Upbeat in the face of overwhelming odds. I miss him. I miss our chats about biochemistry.....and bureaucracy. I miss his rye smile. He always seemed to know what was going on. He concerned himself with the minutest of details, fully aware of the fragility of his circumstance. He was a friend. Dr. Michael Miles

Mr. & Mrs. Short
Thomas & Mary:

I was your son Nick's 5th grade teacher, and subsequently his Spanish teacher, at OMOS. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I am also very sorry that I missed the funeral service, but did not find out about it until the day after it occurred.

Nick was an extraordinary young man, with an insight and sense of humor beyond his years.
His fellow students and I will always remember him for the joy he brought to the classroom.
Que la paz del Seor Jesucristo est siempre con ustedes!

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Short and family,
I taught Nick at Our Mother of Sorrows School many years ago. He was an incredible preson who lit up the room or space wherever he was. Nick was a joy to be around and an inspriration to all he met. He will never be forgotten. I am convinced that Nick is smiling down on us from Heaven in the Presence of God. God bless him. We are all blessed for having known Nick.
With thoughts and prayers,

As children Nicholas(my cousin) and I grew up together. We spent countless hours playing video games or inventing our own games and countless more hours arguing over the rules so that we could best the other. His regularly timed medical things were a constant annoyance to us, always interrupting a pivotal moment in a video game or a heated debate over our own self made rules. I didn't know it then but I now realize that our friendship was special, in those seemingly brief moments when we were together those medical issues became secondary. We were free to dream of our aspirations and laugh. More than anything else, we laughed a lot. Life took me in different directions as we got older but it is a great joy for me that he was able to both meet and bond with my now toddling son. For those that know him well, small children were not on his approved list. That his heart warmed to my son made me feel connected to him again, as we were in childhood. I am grateful for the joy nic brought to my life and I aspire to his strength of will and sheer determination. And I would like to say sorry to him for snickering when he got frustrated because I disorganized his meticulously organized games, but it was amazing fun! Just couldn't help myself... I will miss your OCD. I will miss you Nicholas and I love you deeply. I'm grateful for the times we shared. Whatever comes next for you, may your heart know the love you inspired in so many.

I am so sorry for the loss of Nic, one of my favourite cousins whom I looked up to for many reasons including how smart and passionate he was. When we were kids I was always so excited to see him and he always had such a happiness that came from him when he greeted you. Inspite of the fact that he never was able to enjoy food the way I had I always enjoyed it, I admired that he was never bitter about it. I absolutely look up to him as an example of how to live life. He was so joyful and enthusiastic about life even though life was always a struggle for him. He was always an honorary brother to me since he is one of the cousins I was closest to With my parents divorce . There will always be an emptiness with out him here and I will think of him often. My prayers are with you mary and Tom I love you both, thank you for loving Nic so well and for fighting for him

We are so sad to lose such a great person too early. Nicholas was such a kind hearted person and he could always make us laugh. We will never forget the fight he fought and the difference he made in many people's lives. We send our condolences and love to Mary and Tom in this unimaginable time.

Nicholas was one of the bravest, toughest, and strongest young men I have known. His perseverance, determination and will inspire me. He faced challenges every day that would break most of us. The same goes for his parents.

I loved his laugh --- and just listening to him tell about his favorite things. We all miss him, and look forward to seeing him in heaven...

Nick, I remember your charm and courage. With no guarantee of good health and long life you bore up with grace and and kindness to your friends and family. Many have lived twice your age and have not nearly as much to be proud of. What short time we have left on this earth without you will be better for having known you.
What a good kid!

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Short,
I saw Nick's notice last night and was saddened. I had last heard of him several years ago and was wondering about his status. I will never forget what I found when we operated upon him.
You both dedicated your lives to him and I am amazed that he made it through 31 years.
You obviously have a huge hole in your hearts and lives right now.
Please accept my deepest condolences.

Our thoughts are with all of you. Although we never met Nicholas, we knew him so well through Tom and Mary. The word "brave" immediately comes to mind when we think of Nicholas. Our family was the recipient of numerous valuable life lessons thanks to Nicholas. We feel incredibly blessed. Thanks so much for teaching us so well Nicholas. You will be missed by all of us, your students.
