Ono always had a smile and kind word to share. He was a true gentleman even in difficult circumstances. I think of him every time I drive down Wilmot road and see a cow wandering along , knowing he is probably still watching out for them too!

Ono was funny, thoughtful and kind to a City girl who's job it was to restrict the freedom of his dearly beloved cattle. A true gentleman that I think of often.

Ode to Ono
By Donna Fulton
“Don't worry, Ma, we will make it perfect.”
Butcher and barbecue the steer,
Build and polish the coffin,
Write and speak the words.
Remembering all he showed us, how he loved us,
In his own way.
Classic hats, boots and wranglers,
Pick-up trucks as far as the eye can see
In a meadow at the border,
Beautiful green valley over the mountain pass.
Hundreds have come far.
Big bear hugs among men, rough palms clapping broad backs,
Caring, sharing THE GRIEF.
Rugged faces, red with effort of restraint.
Tears come anyway.
Stellar example, they say "gentleman".
The sun beats downs unmercifully,
Reminding of the fortitude required to work this desert.
Self reliance gleams in every last detail,
Perfect, on time.
Raw wood in a pile last week,
The redwood “box” glows, oil lovingly rubbed to a sheen.
The successful brand burned in
To dignify, signify
Specialty, specialness of
This man who bred cattle and taught horses.
Horseshoe handles, never just decoration, always useful.
The legacy is apparent in the generations.
"Not always perfect", but he did it with love,
A life led to teach and influence.
