Reuben Wagelie Obituary

WAGELIE, Reuben G.

9/9/1934 - 9/27/2021

Surrounded by his family, Dr. Reuben G. Wagelie passed away on Monday, September 27 at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Saundra "Sandi"; five daughters, Rebecca (Scott), Beth (Patrick), Amy (Paul), Meredith and Jennifer (Harvey); eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Reuben "Benny" was born in Cavite City, Philippines. After graduating from medical school at the University of the Philippines, he moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1956 where he completed his residency in pediatrics at Michael Reese Hospital. It was there that he met his wife Sandi whom he married in 1960.

After being drafted as a US Army physician during the Vietnam War and stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, he moved his growing family to Tucson. In 1982 he started his private practice, Allergy Associates of Tucson, and over the next 35 years cared for patients in Tucson and throughout southern Arizona.

He valued education and a strong work ethic in the service of others. He was a lifetime fan of the New York Yankees, played tennis every Sunday at the Tucson Racquet Club, and was an avid runner, gardener, and deep-sea fisherman. While those were his interests, his true joy came from his family, whom he was most proud of and who he loved and protected fiercely. He died peacefully at home with the family he loved around him. He was a kind and generous man who will be forever missed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations in his memory to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Arrangements by MARANA MORTUARY.

I was a young Sergeant (LPN) working at the Ft. Huachuca Allery/Immunization Clinic (RWBAHC) 1997-1998. Dr and Mrs. Wagelie came down every Wednesday. They were the kindest people and took great care of the Soldiers. They often brought us Soldiers goodies like Cinnabon which we always appreciated. I knew Dr. Wagelie was from the Philippines and was there during WWII and was liberated from the Japanese occupation when the US come in. I didn't know he had served at Ft Huachuca as a physician. I thank him for his service to the nation. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Wagelie family.

My heartfelt support is extended to the entire Wagelie family. He will always be with each one of you in all the good measures you take in your lives, and in your hearts.

I was a long time patient (in childhood) of Dr. Wagelie's. He had such a wonderful way of working with children and families, I was always in awe of him. He was very much into natural healing as well and taught our family about teas and local honey - and it's a regimen we still use. He was so caring, and had this happy smile every single time he would see you. He remembered every detail, and he loved his work. He approached people with a love of sharing knowledge and appreciation for every person he encountered.

His daughter became a school teacher at our school. We were thrilled, and enjoyed having what felt like an extension of Dr. Wagelie's brilliance and smiling happiness around us on a daily basis.

I saw Dr. Wagelie as magical, and I still do. His countless good deeds will carry on in the kind memories of many. May your father's / husband's love surround you and comfort you at all times.

Dr. Wagley was my allergist for many years. He was more than just a physician to me. He was an angel who helped me in many ways when I was experiencing financial difficulties. I owe him and the Wagelie family a great debt of gratitude.

I had the good fortune of talking with Him two weeks before he passed. He said he looked forward to having dinner with me again. It was an honor to know him.
