Sandra Eggert Obituary

Sandra Ruth Eggert, LPGA IN LOVING MEMORY On January 23, 2008, Sandy gracefully ended her two-year battle with cancer. Sandy will be greatly missed by her loving friends and family members who's lives she brought joy and happiness. As an LPGA Professional, Sandy was a respected pillar in the golf community as a player, coach, and teacher, for over forty years. While Sandy's accomplishments are many, she was most proud of the student athletes whom she enjoyed the privilege of coaching at both the junior and collegiate levels. Sandy enjoyed a successful coaching career in which she consistently lead her teams to conference championships and top five finishes on the National Tournament stage in the sports of both golf and tennis. She served as the Women's Golf Coach at The University of Arizona and The University of California at Los Angeles as well as the Women's Tennis Coach at Oklahoma State University. Sandy's outgoing and enthusiastic manner made her popular with her students and fans alike. Sandy received the Meritorious Award from the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) for her stewardship as the Director of the National Golf Championship in 1975. When Sandy retired from coaching, she served in the role as the Director of various junior golf programs in the nation as well as an LPGA Teaching Professional at Jack Conrad's Practice Range in Tucson Arizona. Sandy's love of the sport of golf, led her to write a children's book, GOLF IS FUN, which focuses on the rules and etiquette of golf for junior players. In addition to contributing to the education of others, Sandy received the degree of Bachelor of Science from the University of New Mexico, the degree of Master of Arts from New Mexico Highlands University and the degree of Doctor of Education from BYU. In 1993, The University of Arizona bestowed the award of Honorary Letterwoman in admiration for Sandy's contribution to women's athletics. Sandy was a tremendous individual who enjoyed a stellar career. In lieu of a public service, Sandy requested that friends celebrate the memory of her life with laughter during play on a golf course or tennis court. Sandy, we will miss you more than you will ever know.

Sandy and I shared our high school days together at San Marcos and as with all our other classmates, we were more of a family than just a high school. I was thrilled to have made contact with her again at our reunion, like finding a long lost sister. She will be greatly missed and remain one of the special memories of my life.

It is difficult to think of Sandy as not being with us anymore. She seemed to live life to the fullest. Even in her immense struggle, life was to be lived with positivity. She died just as she lived - with grace and dignity. We do miss her immensely.

"I love Sandy" Gaby would say. When I came along I had to earn the kid's trust and hopefully come to share their love as Sandy had done. We missed her terribly but thanks to Mary she kept Sandy present in the classroom long after she had left. I was grateful to have been part of Sandy's life. We shared a lifetime in a blink of an eye. My heart hurts. Amiga querida descanse en paz.

It was with great sadness that I received notice of Sandra's passing from one of our San Marcos Baptist Academy classmates. She was one of the finest persons I have ever known and firmly believe that all who knew her then share these thoughts.

I had the pleasure of working with Sandy when I illustrated her book "Golf is Fun". Her love and enthusiasm for golf was contagious, and my young boys caught the bug and took some lessons, serving also as models for some of the drawings. She was a bright spot in our lives and will be greatly missed.

Sandra was a high school classmate of mine (1949-1950). She and I shared many happy moments. I have been corresponding w/her via email for the past several years. She was a happy and wonderful friend!

It's hard to understand why people are taken from us, but find comfort in knowing you were a special part of a well-lived life.

My memories of Sandy go back to 1949-1950 when we were both attending San Marcos Baptist Academy. She was a very special person. After loosing contact we again got together in 2005 for our 55th class reunion. I'm so glad we could enjoy that brief time togther and the e-mail contacts we were able to maintain after that. Sandy will be missed and will be long remembered!
