Steven Marder Obituary

Steven S. Marder of Tucson, AZ and formerly of New York (Manhattan - Scarsdale - Hartsdale) passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, of natural causes. Steven was born on December 25, 1923, in Moline, IL.

With WWII looming, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps V-12 Program where he was able to attend Cornell University, majoring in Mechanical Eng. and officer candidate school simultaneously. In 1945, he became a Marine Corps Reservist and returned to Cornell to complete his degree, graduating in 1946. He earned a master's degree in Textile Eng. at Lowell Textile Institute, graduating in 1948. He joined Cone Mills Marketing Company that year, rising, over 33 years, to become Assistant VP. His career was interrupted in 1951, being called for 18 months of Reserve duty in Korea where he rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In April 1984, he joined Majestic Mills Company as Director of Merchandising, until his full retirement.

Steven married Margaret Trumper in 1950, whose 33-year marriage ended in divorce. In 1985, Steven remarried, to JoAn Teetor Saxe. In 1990 they moved to Tucson, AZ, joining the Tucson Country Club and settling into an active, fulfilling retirement life together. JoAn preceded him in death, in 2015.

Steven was formerly a member of the Cornell, Princeton, Scarsdale Golf, and The New York Athletic Clubs. Steven was a tennis and bridge player, a sailor and avid reader. He was known for his fierce independence, kindness, generosity, and quiet dignity. He carried himself with old-world charm and new age curiosity.

Steven is survived by his children: Joyce (Budd Bingham) Marder (Salt Lake City) and Richard (Cornelia) Marder (New Canaan, CT). Also, by his granddaughters, Rebecca Zdanowski, and Christina Esposito; as well as his great-granddaughter, Amelia Esposito.

Steven was interred next to JoAn in the Teetor Family Mausoleum in Hagerstown, IN. A private memorial will be held this spring.

We met Steven and Jo a when we would do their yard work. They were such incredible people with the biggest hearts. After Jo A passed away , we invited him to our home for a 4 th of July BBQ. We had the best time and truly enjoyed his company. He was always a man of interesting conversation and fascinated us with his stories of life long ago. He will be truly missed, as will his dear wife Jo An. Truly compassionate human beings. Happy that they are together again at last. RIP to both of them.
