Steven Zaslofsky Obituary

ZASLOFSKY, Steven Barry, It is with deep sorrow we announce that the husband of Barbara Lynn Zaslofsky passed away in his home on May 25, 2009 in Birmingham, AL. He is also survived by his children, Kim (Jamie) Horton, Jeff, (Liz) Stanaway; his grandsons, Matthew and Tyler Horton; his sisters, Barbara (Howie) Powell and Sharyn Zaslofsky. Steven was a lifetime educator who dedicated over 35 years to his love of children, education and athletics. Most recently he was the Headmaster at Shelby Academy, Montevallo, AL. While living in Tucson he was the Athletic Director at St. Michael's Parish Day School. Among the many awards Steve was honored with during his career, his highest honor was the establishment of the "Z" Award at the Cathedral School, NYC for educational excellence. Of his many loves Steven's greatest was his family, especially his two grandsons. He was a generous, compassionate person who cared deeply for those around him. He enriched the lives of all he knew. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held 9:30 a.m., May 28, 2009 at Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Road, with Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon officiating. Burial will follow in the Temple Emanu-El section of Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of Steven B. Zaslofsky to Temple Emanu-El. To Mr. Z´s family, whom I´ve reached out to on linked in. I still think about Mr. Z all the time. The impact he made on my self esteem. Personally putting up a sign on a fence I hit the longest home run at the time made me feel like Babe Ruth at age 14. I´ll simply never forget him. May his memory always be a blessing for you all. Love, Jason Sander

My prayers are with you. Z was a wonderful man and a wonderful teacher. I was at Cathedral for 8 years and was proud to work with Z and the other teachers who made up the most dedicated faculty I've ever encountered. We worked hard and we had a lot of fun together.

Mr.Z.was the athletic director at St. Michaels while all three of my sons were students there. He was an intelligent, caring man and his death is a great loss. Our prayers and thoughts are with the whole family.

Deepest condolences over your loss. Mr. Z. had loads of grace and humor as a teacher, even in the face of the most graceless of gym students.
