Doris Campbell Obituary

Doris Eileen Compton Campbell

Doris Eileen Compton Campbell was born March 2, 1947 in Wayne, Michigan, the second of five children born to Vernon Compton and Doris Landry Compton. A true Southerner, Doris developed a sweet tooth at a young age and her childhood mispronunciation of "sugar" as "tugar" earned Doris the life-long family nickname of Tougy.

Tougy loved the Lord, loved her family, and loved music. She had a kind and generous heart and in many ways lived more in the spirit that Christ taught than in the world. Tougy would give a stranger the coat off her back, and often did, extending her servant's heart to the least of these, including one time wrapping her coat around a stray dog to keep it warm. Tougy was a thoughtful gift giver and was always prepared with something kind to say.

Tougy's maternal ancestors moved from France to North America 385 years ago, eventually settling in LaFourche Parish, Louisiana in the year 1785. Much like her Cajun ancestors, Tougy's life was sometimes filled with heartache. A family dispute relating to property separated Tougy from her much-loved maternal grandparents at a young age. Her parents divorced, as did Tougy, following a difficult marriage in her 20s. Later in life, Tougy's mental health needs occasionally exceeded the best care available today despite the efforts of her mother, sister and brother-in-law, three brothers, and extended family.

From an early age, Tougy excelled in all things related to music. Younger brothers Vernon and Norman remember hours spent in small Alexandria churches practicing the piano while Tougy rehearsed on the church organ, just the three siblings together. Tougy was an excellent pianist, flutist, violinist, and organist, regularly accompanying and performing for her church and family.

Tougy brought much sweetness to those in her life, rarely asking for anything in return. As we consider her life, we are reminded of how much we have yet to learn to best care for those we love. In many respects, this world is just not quite ready for those like our beloved Tougy. Our family is grateful for her life and we know the place she is going is filled with kind and giving souls like hers.

Tougy leaves behind siblings Ronnie and Lesley Compton, Vernon Compton and Mack Thetford, and Norman and Ida Compton. She is preceded in death by her parents Doris Landry Compton and Vernon Compton and sister Carolyn Carlton.
