James Rodgers Obituary

James Allen Rodgers M.D.

September 1, 1951 - May 17, 2023

Dr. James Allen Rodgers was born to Deania and Calvin Rodgers of Tulsa, Oklahoma, September 1, 1951. He completed his medical school prerequisites at the University of Tulsa in 1972, where he was a part of the Delta Omega Chapter of Sigma Chi. He graduated with honors from the University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1976 before becoming a renowned neurosurgery specialist in eastern Oklahoma. Later in life, Dr. Rodgers received the Significant Sig Award in 2022. After completing his internship and residency in neurosurgery in 1981, he opened a solo practice in Muskogee, Oklahoma, returning to Tulsa in 1989. In his solo practice, he focused on cervical and lumbar spine problems. One of the founders of Tulsa Spine and Specialty Hospital, Dr. Rodgers had nearly 50 years of diverse experience in neurosurgery, touching many lives with his admirable surgical skill, caring personality, and love for rock & roll in the surgical gallery, where he gained his vastly known nickname "Doc Roc." He is known by all as a great surgeon, a good father, a loving husband, and a man whose indelible legacy includes revitalizing the legendary Cain's Ballroom and founding one of Oklahoma's most successful physician-owned hospitals. Dr. Rodgers leaves behind his wife, Patsy; two sons, Chad and Hunter Rodgers and their mother, Alice; daughter-in-law, Alison Rodgers; two granddaughters, Maryn and Marlee; sister, Paula Patterson; stepdaughters, Amanda and Taylor; and stepgrandchildren, Dawsen, Sawyer, and Rowan. His family and friends will remember him for his radiant personality, contagious smile, and kind heart. We invite his friends, colleagues, and patients to join his family as we celebrate his life. Nothing brought Dr. Rodgers more joy than treating the people in this community. His family will take great comfort in connecting with those he served in a place he held so dear. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at Cain's Ballroom on June 8, at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. James A. Rodgers Memorial Scholarship with the Sigma Chi Foundation, Tulsa Boys Home, or Boy Scouts of America Troop 153 in Tulsa.

It's now been a little over one year since we all lost Dr. Jim Rodgers. Every few days I so badly miss him.
He and I were friends, but I cannot claim to be a real close friend. I've known him socially for close to 20 years, but in the few years he treated me as a patient, I found him to be one of best people to be around in this entire state. Was he flawed, . . who among us isn't? but he was a very, very good man. God, I miss seeing him. May God bless . .

My deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Rodgers. He was such a great physician. I had the opportunity to work at Muskogee Regional Hospital as well as at his private practice as a medical transcriptionist and he was always such a great human being. I just recommended him to my sister who is having issues and was looking up his office number to give to her and just found out he had passed last year. May you all find peace and strength in the Lord.

I had not seen Dr Rogers since 2020 and had no idea he was sick. I visited a new pain specialist today and found out about his passing. I tell you, it took my breath away and I felt tears welling up. I can not tell you what he meant to me. Beyond relieving my pain back in 2011, the absolute kindness that emanated from his soul was beautiful. You could see it on his countenance before he spoke a word. And that smile! What a light he was. If his passing impacted me, a mere patient, this much, I can only imagine what those closes to him must be going through. My prayers are with them and my gratitude for helping him help others all of these years.
