Nicholas Guagliardo Obituary

Nicholas Vincent Guagliardo

January 9, 1925 - August 8, 2023

Nicholas V. ("Zeke" ) Guagliardo left this earth on August 8, at the age of 98 years and 8 months. He resided in Tulsa for over 70 years with his native Tulsan wife of 72 years, Georgia Lee (Featherston) Guagliardo, until her passing in 2020.

Nick Guagliardo is believed to have been the last known surviving WW II submarine veteran in Oklahoma. He was born in New Orleans, and he was a Louisianan until WW II. He persuaded his parents to sign him up for the Navy at age 17. He became a submariner on the USS Mackerel and the USS Loggerhead. In later years, a quiet grin would stretch across his face as he would proclaim that "he was an Army draft dodger."

Throughout his life, Nick was persistent with his goals. Impatient with College on his return from WW II, he graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics and Technology in Tulsa. He was a lifelong employee of American Airlines. He was a founding member of the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church until a 1990; he then moved to St Puis, and in 2020 he joined St. Cecilia. He was an active Union member, an avid square dancer, and a member of both the American Legion and DAV. His submarine connection helped with the organization of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Submarine Veterans of WWII (now Submarine Inc.) In his busy retirement, he continued his commitment to the Muskogee War Memorial Park where the WWII USS Batfish Submarine resides, and he added Meals on Wheels, the Transport Workers Union Retirement Association of Oklahoma, and the Red Cross.

He is survived by two daughters, Vickie Guagliardo and her husband, Gary N. Clark, Ann Shelby; one son-in-law, Dennis Morris; one sister-in-law, Connie and husband, Steve Wong; and sister-in-law, Faye Guagliardo. His cherished grandchildren are Margaret Clark and Sam Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Annie Guagliardo; daughter, Susan Morris; son, Nicholas Guagliardo Jr.; brothers, Anthony, John (Pete), Jerome, Frank Jr., and Lawrence; sisters, Antonia, Nora, and Lou Anna.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Batfish Memorial Foundation, 18139 South 129th West Ave., Sapulpa, OK 74066. or to Friends of Muskogee War Memorial Park, P.O. Box 2471, Muskogee OK 74402-2471.

Dear family and friends of Nick,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Nick´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Mackerel SS-204, USS Loggerhead SS-374 and USS Brill SS-330.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

National Chaplain, USSVI.
