R. Langenkamp Obituary

R. Dobie Langenkamp

By R. Dobie Langenkamp

FUNERAL

I request that there be no formal service, religious or otherwise.

Just because a man has died doesn't give him the right to take 3 or so good hours of a living person to sit on a hard pew and hear bromides and platitudes. I'd rather my friends play golf or weed their garden. (If you have three hours to kill on my behalf drop by and wash my widow's car.)

My family and friends may, if they wish, assemble at their own time and place to discuss those things that they feel worthy of remembering about me and passing along.

WISDOM AND CLICHES:

Here is the place where the OBWW's ("Old Bastards with a Watch" in my father's parlance) get to pontificate about what they have learned and what the younger set should heed. The vacuity of advice is demonstrated by the fact that many are self-contradictory.

---Look before you leap - He who hesitates is lost. --- A rolling stone gathers no moss. --- Bloom where you are planted. --- A stitch in time saves nine. --- Don't sweat the small stuff. --- Keep your feet on the ground and your head in the clouds. Other sayings (some of which I have made up for the occasion) meet the gold standard of truth: --- Be nice to the people on the way up you may need them coming down. --- Be honest, even if you suffer financially for it. --- Never inflict pain on another needlessly. --- Life is too short to pass up a good joke or a chance to make love. --- Never vote Republican. ---Whiskey has killed many, but it has saved more. --- Don't be stingy - there are no pockets in most shrouds. --- Eschew pomposity. --- Never confuse wealth with virtue, never confuse status with worth. --- Forgiveness is cost effective. --- A lazy man steals the time of others. --- Do some good while you are here.

THANKS

--- To Mimi and Bob Langenkamp, my parents who did so much. --- To my many coaches and teachers who helped me along the way, especially Coach Don Slagle, a warm wise bear of a man. --- To the Alfred E Sloan Foundation for my Stanford 4-year scholarship. --- To the Curtis Foundation for my 3-year Harvard Law Scholarship. --- To Tom Shannon who gave me my first legal job. --- To Dickson Saunders who gave me my first legal job in Tulsa and whose generosity and counsel assured my financial success in life. --- To Arch Edwards and George McIsaac for recommendations leading to position of Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Energy Department during the Carter Administration. --- To John Shages for his recommendation leading to my appointment as Deputy Assistant Secretary during the Clinton Administration. --- To Jerry Goodman for getting me into teaching and higher education. --- To my four children who brought me great pride and joy and showed us all how to live life with adventure and zest. (BEAR MEAT) --- To Uncle Dave Dobie the best partner and mentor one could have. --- To my first wife Mary Alice for our four children, her expert motherhood, and many good years. -- To Sandra Minger Langenkamp my beloved second wife – more than 30 years of good times and loving care. Finding her was one of my life's great breaks. -- To Oklahoma, where mobile homes, red dirt, cattle, old rusty oil equipment, incessant winds gave me a good perspective with which to view the world. -- To America, which embodies as much goodness and decency as any country ever has.

I´m embarrassed I just learned of Dobie´s death. He was always ahead of me! Met in the late 1970´s at the National Petroleum Council´s committee on the strategic petroleum reserve. We came up with a great plan - which worked, most recently when President Biden used it to moderate oil prices after Putin invaded Ukraine. More importantly, we became friends for the next 40 years. Dobie was a great man and great friend. I have no doubt he´s in Heaven.

I can remember when he joined Doerner, Stuart, Saunders (and years later Langenkamp, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Young, Sweet, confident, very intelligent new attorney. I interacted with Dobie because I worked for Reading & Bates. He was aways helpful, willing and very knowledgeable. Loved knowing him when we were both very young and just starting our "grownup life". A little humor: when I asked him a question, not being a lawyer my self.. I joking would tell him I was just askIng for the time.. not how to make the watch. Jan Johnson

To Dobi's family:

Thank you for lending us, at the Department of Energy, this smart, kind, funny, hard-working man. It was a pleasure to work alongside Dobi and to be recognized by him during his exiting luncheon.

Dobi truly respected people from all cultures. Most importantly, he was happy to return to his beloved family and home state of Oklahoma.

May you find peace knowing his genuine kindness has remained on my mind, and in my heart, for the last 25 yrs.

Saddening to learn of Doby's passing. While we were on contact only intermittently Doby was a friend and when we'd bump into each other he'd always ask the about the state of geothermal. I spoke to his TU law class several times. He will be missed. Kindly advise when & where a get together is scheduled.

Sandra, my condolences. My work with Dobie has left me and my family with many memories of his wit and kindness. My daughter will never forget being the only child allowed at your home for ELJ parties. "May his memory be a blessing" is an apt Jewish saying.

An intriguing and charming dinner guest and definitely a person of great interest. It was always a treat to run into Sandra and Dobie around Tulsa and catch up on their travels and the kids.

What a loss to Tulsa! Karen Nelson

Dobie was best friends with my former father-in-law Joe Dempsey and instrumental in my decision to go to Cornell Law School and practice law. I will miss him and continue to follow his sage advice...especially about voting and whiskey.

I was privileged to have met Dobie Langenkamp, a tower of a man among men. He probably had a positive effect on more people than he expected.

Wow, I never knew your father, but saw his obit in the paper. What an interesting man...to write his own obituary and in
such a fashion He must of been a great man and obviously lived life to the fullest. God Bless all.

My condolences to Dobie´s family and friends. I remember him well from my days at TU and for his sharp wit and welcome irreverence. He was sorely missed once he retired and I am sure will likewise be sorely missed by his family and wide circle of friends.

I saw this on Facebook. My sincere condolences for your loss. Your father/grandfather sounds like a very wise yet loving man. He´s so reminiscent of my own father. Again, I´m so sorry for your loss.

Dad filled his life with friends, adventures and a wide array of intellectual pursuits. He told great jokes and wrote beautiful poetry, plays and stories. He traveled the world but loved every inch of Oklahoma . He didn´t seek luxury but preferred the nitty gritty. He enjoyed the friendships of people from every walk of life and appreciated the role that good people play in the life of their communities. He believed in America and his life is proof of its promise to people who work hard. I will miss him so much.

To the Langenkamp family from the Joe Dempsey family-we send our sincere condolences and gratitude for Dobie´s life and many contributions. Our Dad and Mom loved Dobie for his many talents and his friendship-My father considered Dobie to be one of his very best friends who he loved to converse and think out loud with, share books with, and even better, play tennis with. Once Dobie gave Dad a huge trophy for organizing a group of OBWWs to meet at the Summit club where each person was invited to present a paper on something they knew nothing about to the rest of the group-of course, Dad said they mostly gossiped and enjoyed each other´s company-We will miss this great man and we send our love to the Langenkamp family-Laura Dempsey

I did not know this gentleman, but I think we would have liked each other, even if I am not a Democrat. What a well-crafted obit.
