Rusty Russell Obituary

Rusty Russell

Rusty Russell; born May 5, 1956, in Casper, Wyoming, died in Tulsa on March 27, 2023, from lung cancer.

Rusty was a gifted professional writer and photographer, but his passion was music, especially jazz guitar. He was a touring musician, proficient song writer and a teacher/mentor of aspiring artists in Nashville.

In his 35-year career he recorded with distinguished performers, wrote for the Grand Ole Opry and was the Nashville Editor at Guitar Player Magazine. Among his achievements, Rusty was honored to improve the field for all musicians through volunteer work in the Nashville Musicians Association (AFM Local 257). A very special person, Rusty's unique communication abilities coupled with his love of teaching and marvelous wit brought joy and confidence to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lynn Questell; sister, Marcie McKenzie; nephew, James McKenzie and James' wife, Apryl.

Friends are invited to Schaudt's Glenpool-Bixby Funeral Service, 1329 E. 151st St. Glenpool, OK 74033, on Friday, March 31, 2023, at 1 p.m., for a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to your favorite charity.

Rusty was one of my favorite people. I loved being around him because he was so funny and so smart and so talented he just made your day better every time you saw him. He took some great photographs of me and we played music together and had a blast. We could have a great conversation on any topic and laugh our butts off. I miss him so much.

Rusty was always a dear friend to all the Wichita James family (Alfred James III and his sons, Fred, me, Peter and David). We treasure his sincerity and kindness. He was a special person. Thank you, Russ.

Rusty was one of the most talented, generous, warmest and funny people I've ever known. I loved it when we got together for coffee (not nearly often enough) and caught up. The world has lost one of the really good ones. Vaya con dios, friend.

A great musician that never acted like he was above younger players. I always enjoyed his company both as a person and on stage.
