Samantha Carlton Obituary

CARLTON - SAMANTHA RIZZO, 35, died suddenly in an automobile accident near Amarillo, TX early Saturday morning, November 24, 2007. Samantha and her husband and two young children were traveling back to their Phoenix , AZ home from a Thanksgiving trip when the tragic incident occurred. Samantha was born January 3, 1972 in Lawrence, MA, and moved to Phoenix with her family in 1977. Samantha graduated from Xavier College Preparatory School in 1990, Arizona State University in 1995 with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture, and The University of Michigan in 1999 with a Master's degree in Architecture. Samantha was a member of theAmerican Institute of Architects. Samantha met her husband Slade Carlton in Arizona State University's school of architecture in 1992. They were married in Boston, MA in 1997, and had 2 daughters, Zoe and Olivia. We will all miss Sam's beautiful and infectious smile and her one-of-a-kind giggle. She was truly joyful. Samantha loved to spend time with family and friends. She knew how to take a house and to turn it into a warm and welcoming home where you could truly find great happiness and peace. Samantha was a reliable and trusted friend, a devoted and loving wife, and a constant and generous mother. Sam supported and comforted many over the years. She was committed to those she knew. Samantha was creative, bright and loved a good adventure. Samanthahad greatcreative energy. She applied this skill to her work and in the home. She was an outstanding chef and loved experimenting with culinary creations. We all respected the way that Samantha dealt with life's challenges. She did not let life's speed bumps slow her down. One phrase would often do the trick... "It is what it is." Samantha was strong but extremely kind, patient and nurturing as well. We will always hold a special memory of Samantha in our hearts. Samantha will continue to live on in the spirit of all of us she touched. Samantha is survived by: her husband, Sladeand daughters, Zoe and Olivia Carlton of Phoenix; parents, Dick and Kathryn Rizzo of Paradise Valley; sister, Julie Hyde and her husband, Matt of Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Samantha Rizzo Carlton Scholarship Fund at the Arizona State University College of Design, c/o Sharon Haugen, P.O. Box 871905, Tempe, AZ 85287-1905. A memorial service for Samantha will be held at 4 p.m., on Thursday, November 29 at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, 4455 E. Dear Family & Friends of Sam,
I also graduaed from Xavier with Sam. We followed in similar footsteps as I am also an architect and I moved to Michigan just after she completed her MArch at UofM. She had such grace and I will always remember her positive and warm hearted approach to everything. I will certainly support her memory directly through her scholarship and hopefully indirectly with my career as an architect and mother. I am so sorry and saddened by her passing. My sincere condolences.

I went to High School next door to Sam. News of her passing shocked and saddened me beyond any other. No star so bright and accomplished should be extinguished at such an age. My deep deep sympathies go out to Slade and her daughters and also to her parents and sister. All through the day today I would remember funny little incidents involving Sam long buried in the back of my mind and I would laugh out loud. All of these incidents took place when Sam, Sarah and Pete Gavette and I were together. I probably would have only seen her at the reunions but I know how much a mother, wife, and professional matters to those who love her and I know she will be heart breakingly missed. Again my, deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones.

Dear Slade, Zoe, Olivia, Rizzo and Carlton families and friends,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I know Samantha through PVUMC Preschool and just think the world of her. In addition to seeing and talking to her at school, we always seemed to bump into each other whether it be at the park, the art museum, gymnastics , etc. The last time I saw her outside of school was just a few weeks ago at the park. She was so kind to push my daughter on the swing until I could catch up to her. That's just the kind of person she was. I always enjoyed talking to her. She was always so kind, thoughtful, had a wonderful smile and was beautiful inside and out. You all will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dick,Kathy, Julie and family. I am so sorry for the loss of Samantha. She was such a beautiful person. No matter what age, the loss of a loved one in the family is very hard to accept. You will grieve in your own way and as long as it takes. I hope your family, Samantha's husband and little girls will be nurtured by all as time passes. A person once told me that God doesn't give us anymore than we can handle and I believe that.

You have my deepest sympathy,

Sincerely, Donna Callea
