Phillip Bartlett Obituary

TUSCALOOSA Phil Bartlett, born September 13, 1959, was stolen from us February 7, 2008, in a senseless criminal act. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. today, February 10, 2008, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Otho and Eula Bartlett of Tuscaloosa and Jack and Mariene Prince of Tuscaloosa, and uncles, Arvin Bartlett of Houston, Texas and Gene Prince of Centreville.

In his youth he was an excellent little ball player; he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football. He was the high scorer in many basketball games and a member of many championship teams. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1978. As an adult he continued his love of sports by coaching numerous teams. For the last 15 years he owned and operated Bart Mart convenience store in Northport. Phil especially enjoyed spending time with the "little boys", his son and nephews, taking them fishing, hunting, and playing outdoor sports. Phil was a friend to all who knew him. He was always there to lend a hand; he enjoyed time spent hunting, being outdoors and NASCAR racing. Phil was a loving husband, daddy, son, brother, uncle and friend.

He leaves a loving and devoted wife, Sue Stein; son, Briar of Gordo; daughter, Briana of Gordo; father, Raymon of Tuscaloosa; mother, Dorothy Prince Ryan (Wayne Denson) of Tuscaloosa; brothers, Steve (Laura), Keith (Patty), and David Dunn; nephews, Ray and Joseph; niece, Kailey; stepdaughter, Denise Littlefair; step grandchildren Shalie Cook and Cody Littlefair: his best friends and babies (his dogs), Max, Prissy and Molly.

His bright smile could win the hearts of those around him. It is a pleasure just to have known him. With Phil's passing we remind others that his life is one to be celebrated. Although we will miss him everyday, he will forever remain in our hearts.

Pallbearers will be Steve Bartlett, Keith Bartlett, David Dunn, Briar Bartlett, Ray Bartlett, and Joseph Bartlett.

Honorary pallbearers are the Guy family of Gordo, The Ophelia Harrison, Terry Webber, Terry Rodrigue, Danny Bobo, Harold Moseley, Billy Hoggle, and longtime loyal customers and friends of Bart Mart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the children's' or animal charity of one's choice.

I never knew Mr. Bartlett and I do not even know the family. But I had been in his store a few times on my way to the river and I use to see him every morning on my way to work about 10 minutes till 8 when he would be pulling up to the store. Come this Monday morning before I had heard about this I did not see him and I noticed the store looked a little different. I thought to myself ummm and later that day I heard what had happened. It is so crazy to not even know him, and it just tore me up. He seemed like such a good person. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Family,
We are so saddened by your loss.
Phil was a great person, taken away too soon. There is a song by Mercy Me, you may have heard called "I Can Only Imagine". Listen to it if you ever have the chance. It might be comforting in some small way. It's about seeing heaven for the first time. When someone leaves us we are left to deal with the pain of this loss but the one who leaves us gets to see heaven for the first time. A place we can only barely imagine. A place so wonderful, warm and beautiful. Greeted by unbelievable love and peace. Phil might not can be with us physically but I believe he still has great influence over the lives of those he so dearly loves. I beleive you will see him again one day. God bring you all peace and comfort at this difficult time.
Our hearts and prayers are with you.

Dear Keith -
my heart breaks for you. I can't even imagine how hard this is for you and all of the family, but I hope it helps to know that there are many people who care and are surrounding you in prayer.
Remember these words of our Savior, and hold on to them! --
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, who is, and was, and who is to come, the Almighty." (Revelation 1:8)

Raymon, Steve, and Keith

I am still so shocked to hear about Phil. I know your hearts are broken and that you must feel so much anger at such a senseless act. He was taken from you way to soon. I have only fond memories of the time spent with Phil since our childhood. I was not at all surprised to read and hear all the tributes given to him in the news. He was obviously loved by many. Please know that even though I couldn't be there in person, I was there in spirit. I have been thinking about and praying for all of you. Take care of yourselves and each other in the time to come and know that all your family in Texas send their love.
