Brill, David John Age 83 Of St. Paul Dave died September 25, 2006. He was born in Minneapolis on August 13, 1923, to George Henry and Veronica Louise Diederich Brill, who preceded him in death, as did his 2 half-brothers Willard Brill, Francis Schreiber; sister-in-law Mary Gatto; and brother-in-law William Towle. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Sally (Sarah Ann Towle). Children: Stephen (Cynthia Lehr), Nicholas (Linda Pearl), Michael (Nancy Lethert), Christopher (Melinda Swenson), Lucy (Timothy Plunkett), Matthew (Carolyn Kennedy), Peter (Lori Sterzinger), and Vincent (Suzanne Revor). Great-grandchildren: Elliot, Olivia Hurley, and Elizabeth. Brothers: Alan (Sheila Roach), and Thomas (Bernell Lilla). Brother-in-law Timothy (Sheila Sheridan) Towle. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1943 and served for 3 years in the Pacific Theater in World War II fighting in the battles of Tarawa, Guam, and Okinawa with the 6th Marine Division Artillery, and was present in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese Navy signed their surrender. On returning to St. Paul he enrolled in St. Thomas College, graduating in 1950 with a BA in Physical Education. While at St. Thomas College he was very active in athletics, playing on the championship football teams of 1947-1949, and the Cigar Bowl team of 1949. He was Grand Tiger his senior year and was chosen to be honored in "Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges." He joined the St. Paul Public School system and taught at Mechanic Arts High School until it closed in 1976 and then at Washington H.S. and Como Sr. H.S. until retiring in 1984. He had a deep and lasting affection for his "girls" (daughters-in-law), and was a "hero" to his brothers, and others. The cabin on Little Bass Lake was his heaven after retiring and he could cut the grass to his heart's content. He was committed, hard working, and strong and loved, in this order, his God, his family, his students ----- and dogs! To the Brill Family: Dave will be missed terribly. As his neighbor of 20 years, I talked with him over the fence, shared weddings, sorrows, watched his painting and window cleaning! and his fight with health. He washed that truck and was so proud of it. He went to church everyday. Sally, it was just great to see both of you at Mandy's wedding. We have a great picture of the two of you. My deepest sympathy. Donna Forester, Port Richey, Florida

I was so lucky as a new teacher to have Dave Brill as my mentor at Mechanic Arts High School. I will never forget him. He taught me so many "tricks to the trade" of teaching. I sum it up in the Bible scripture, Galatians 5:22. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control." This was Dave, my mentor.

Dear Aunt Sally, Lucy, Steve, Mike, Nick, Chris, Matt, Pete, Vince & families - Uncle Dave "fought the Good Fight" and kept the faith ... and now he's at peace. I'm sure Grandpa and Grandma Brill greeted him in Heaven and they are all together now, smiling down upon you. I was able to have a final visit with him just a couple of weeks ago and we had an enjoyable chat. He loved you all very, very much and he got a big smile on his face when I reminded him of his recent 57th wedding anniversary, and the birthday party you had in August to celebrate his and Aunt Sally's birthdays. We also talked about Buck and Arrow, the Marines, and his grandchildren. I'm glad we had that last visit ... he was a good man and I was proud to be his niece.

Sending you hugs, support, love and prayers ... God bless!

Uncle Dave was always one of the strongest men I knew both physically and spiritually. I am certain that he's smiling on us & waiting for us to rejoin him in the church triumphant.

Crawling around that big house of his & Sally's with my cousins as we grew up will always have great memories for me. To my cousins: You are in my prayers & thoughts during this time. Aunt Sally, I share your grief and will be there in spirit as you celebrate his life. We are all better for knowing him.

Dear Sally and Family,
I just read of Dave's death in the paper this evening. My heartfelt sympathy to each one of you. I am so happy that after so many years I had the opportunity to re-connect with Dave when you moved into the apartments on Graham.
I recall many happy times we had growing up in Red Wing, and how we 8th grade girls were often "swooning"over David Brill!
You will be in my prayers as you grieve. Sally, you were so good to him.Courage and Peace be yours in the weeks
ahead. Be assured of my prayers and love.

Dave Brill was a brave solider in WW2, a loving husband to Sally, a great father to all his kids, a superb and caring teacher who positively influenced the lives of many young people.

He was an inspiring colleague to teach with at Mechanic Arts when I was a young teacher back in the early 60's. He was a true inspiration to all who knew him.

My wife, Ruth and I extend our sympathy and prayers to all the family.

To the whole Brill clan,

Father John called me this afternoon to let me know about the passing of Dave. I am so sorry for your loss. May it comfort you all to know that the caring thoughts of others are always near.

I have fond thoughts of Dave when I am in the car wash. He use to raz me about my dirty car when I would pick him up for church. He would also tell me stories about you all, the dog and his truck. He loved you all very much. His Family and the Church were very important to him.

Peace be with you all.

To Sally & The Brill Family
My sister Joni & I were fortunate enough to meet Dave (Sally & Lucy too) through our Dad, Aaron. Dave and our Dad served together as Marines in WWII and it was through their amazing experince as young boys we were able to connect at the WWII Memorial Dedication in Washington DC. We all know how much Dave meant to our Dad and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have been able to share in this amazing experience together, especially reuniting them after 60 years. The reunion of these two proud Marines and old friends was the highlight of the weekend. With our deepest sympathys and warmest thoughts - The Beshansky Family

Hello Brill Family,
I was very sorry to hear about your loss Monday. Even though I hadn't spent a lot of time with Dave I certainly enjoyed the time talking with him during Vince and Suzanne's wedding festivities. What a great man and from what Vince has told me of him over the years he lived a full life and will certainly be missed. I hope the whole family is celebrating Dave's life and passes on the knowledge and wisdom he provided over the years to the younger generations. Once again, Jenni and I are very sorry for your loss.

Sally and Family,
I was lucky enough to enjoy working with and being partners with Dave when Como Park first opened as a Senior High. We had so many great times teaching Physical Education together. He was so great and easy to work with. His work ethics were the best. I never had to worry about him "taking care of business". He was always FIRM but FAIR with all he dealt with. It was my great honor to work with Dave for those many years. I loved that man and will miss and think of him daily. God bless all of you that mourn his passing.
