Francis and I grew up, living about 6 miles apart. We went to High-school together. We had a dance band together and spent many happy occasions together. Yes, we have lost a very dear person. The Francis you knew now was the same Francis 60+ years ago. Sad to say his only brother died about a month ago and now there is just Ellie, also a dear sister. Over the past years, we lived hundreds of miles apart yet the fond friendship never died. Sadly as the Psalmist said at Psalms 90:9 "We have finished our years just like a whisper."The days of our years are seventy or eighty years, yet their insistence is on trouble and hurtful things, for it must quickly pass by and away we fly". I have so much more to tell. All good, just ask. Leo

I am so sorry for your loss. I can remember when he started at Hill Murray and the very first band I ever saw there had maybe a dozen people. And he wrote the school fight song!!!
Well done my faithful servant! No one could have done it any better.

My siblings and I had Mr. Asenbrenner for Band at Humboldt High School in the 60's. He was the first teacher to arrive in the morning and the last teacher to leave in the afternoon. He provided individual lessons for all band students from 7th to 12th grade. During football season he took the band to every football game and masterminded multiple band halftime shows each season. I got to sit near him during the games and learned all my game rules from him. He was responsible for most of the school spirit. He also made sure the other sport seasons were well attended by the pep band. He inspired us to enter the annual music contest. The band trip to Bridgeport, CT, via Washington, DC and New York City was a trip of a lifetime. Marching in all the local parades--Winter Carnival, Aquatennial, School Traffic Police, etc. were unforgettable experiences. He nurtured the partnership with American National Bank and Mr. Kane, to benefit all of us. Our concerts exposed us to wonderful music and challenged us musically. He was responsible for our happy high school memories, and his influence has gone with us into adulthood. If all teachers could leave a legacy like his, ... words don't do him justice.
Thank you to his children for sharing him with the rest of us.

Dear Sue and family, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. He was such a great dad and I have so many great memories of him. I mostly remember him taking us to the hockey games; tagging along with the band. He was a generous and loving man and he will be missed. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.

Mr A. was the band director at Humboldt High School on the West Side of St. Paul for a number of years prior to his tenure at Hill-Murray. Four kids in our family were very lucky to have been taught by Mr. A. the responsibility and opportunity of knowing how to read music, use and keep our instruments, and taught us military bearing in Marching Band. Another lasting memory -- and a trip of a lifetime for us high school students -- was Mr. A. arranging for the Humboldt Marching Band to march in the P.T. Barnum Parade in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Mr. Asenbrenner was a very fine man, a great teacher and an even better mentor. May God bless him and his family for the devotion he gave to many, many students in our communities.

Mr. A was an outstanding man! I have so many wonderful memories of Mr. A from my days at Hill-Murray and beyond. From directing our band, marching band, and pit orchestra...to band trips (so much fun!) to being such a wonderful role model to all of us. Mr. A taught us love of music, school pride and spirit, and so much about love of life and family. Mr. A always was there with a smile and hug! Marching in Disney, on White Bear Ave and so many more! Great memories from Father daughter dances and dancing with Mr A at our Prom senior year:) Through the years I would run into Mr. A at basketball games at St. Thomas when Mary played. He would always greet me with a smile and a hug. I loved that he came to our class reunions... Seeing him at Ashland Academy when my own kids took lessons there. He was always up for a visit! Most recently Mr. A and I crossed paths at Transfiguration School where I teach. I was blessed with the opportunity to teach one of his grandchildren:) I loved spending time with Mr. A during our grandparents day and seeing him at concerts and in our carline! Always with his big smile-hello-and best of all his hug! Thanks Barb for bringing him to my mom's and dad's funerals. That meant the world to me. I sent prayers to all of you Asenbrenner Kids and grandkids! Your dad/grandpa was one of the best! Love, Julie Thomas Blanda Hill-Murray Class of 1979!

Before Hill-Murray, Mr. A took a rag tag bunch of kids to a parade in Bridgeport, Conn. and had the foresight to have us raise enough money to visit New York City and Washington D.C. on the way. He was a very wise and beloved teacher of music at Humboldt High and I was one of the graduated senior girls who went along for that wonderful trip! My prayers to his lovely family.

Mr. A was the most amazing man! He was one of my heros & taught me so very, very much! Mr. A was my band instructor, but he taught me so much about life. He taught us all how important practice was & how not to be afraid of the performance. He taught us how to give it our all and not to be afraid of making mistakes - he taught us to trust our practice & preparations. He found joy in music - but more, in the people who made the music & in all those who enjoyed it! His passing is a huge loss to all of us. My most sincere sympathies are with his family & all he held dear.
